I feel like they should make great runes permanently active in NG+ the same way they made the smithing stone BB's permanent. For melenias especially, cause you're 90% done with the game by the time you get to her.

Step 1: defeat melania

I already know a better version of this - at least, for non-boss encounters. I imagine the Dexterity version you demonstrated would probably be much better for lengthy boss fights, but this Strength/Faith variant works well for random enemies. Additionally, the builds naturally uses a greatshield, so blocking is viable.

Build Title: Everlasting Blasphemous Paladin

Equipment Needed:
Great Stars (Ash of War: Prayerful Strike)
Icon Shield
[any armor]
Taker's Cameo
Godskin Swaddling Cloth
Assassin's Crimson Dagger
Blessed Dew Talisman
Rykard's Great Rune
Incantation Seal
- Blessing of the Erdtree

The incantation seal will primarily be used for mini-boss and boss encounters. Otherwise, everything else can and will work perfectly for normal play.

The Great Stars life leech on hit. Godskin Swaddling Cloth further enhances the effect by life-leeching on consecutive hits. The Icon Shield and Blessed Dew Talisman both combo together for some regeneration. Crimson Dagger ensures further healing whenever the player successfully takes advantage of guard-breaks or stance-breaks from using the Great Stars, which is a greathammer weapon, and thus proves quite effect at making openings for ripostes. Taker's Cameo and Rykard's Rune ensure some massive healing with every kill, and Prayerful Strike heals for 30% of maximum HP if it lands, on top of dealing hefty damage with solid poise.

Adding everything up? Every kill tends to net half HP. A kill from Prayerful Strike is nearly an entire full heal. Tested with 60 vigor.

There are a few advantages and disadvantages to this build:

1) Most of the life leeching will come from killing, and not hitting. Thus, this build isn't quite as good in boss fights as it is for demolishing the lead up to a boss fight. Still, the passives add up quite well on their own, and the Great Stars as a weapon is generally just pretty good for fighting big beefy bois, be it to proc bleed or to break stances and make sweet use of Crimson Dagger.

2) None of the items are from Consecrated Snowfield or Elphael, so if you don't intend to go there, then this build is a powerful alternative that avoids Malenia - particularly since most of the items are acquired in Leyndell, Altus Plateau, and Volcano Manor. Only the Taker's Cameo, Rykard's Rune, and Godskin Swaddling Cloth require going to Mountaintop of the Giants, but even then, only as far as ice dragon Borealis. Great Stars + Prayerful Strike on its own is quite good, especially when paired with Crimson Dagger, Icon Shield, and Blessed Dew Talisman. If it doesn't outright kill an enemy, it will almost certainly stance-break 'em.

3) Strength, Faith, and maybe even Arcane are all viable with this build, since the Great Stars is a greathammer capable of causing bleed and that Prayerful Strike is a holy Ash of War. Alas, bleed infusions are out of question due to that holy affinity, but an arcane-faith build can still make good use of this set-up, as the Great Stars only needs 22 Str and 12 Dex and the Icon Shield only needs 22 Str.

4) If the player wishes to, it could be more effective to replace the Icon Shield with the Blasphemous Blade for the life leech effect - I simply kept the shield as part of the build due to the passive effect being advantageous on its own, and because blocking can be nice as an option. Considering the stats that this build plays nice to, the Blasphemous Blade can even be a secondary weapon! Nice.

edit:
It has come to my attention that Great Stars works with most Ashes of War. This means than, when an enemy is within the fog of such an AoW, you will regenerate HP. Status effects do not contribute, however - thus, you will not gain healing if you poison your enemy with the Great Stars on a poison infusion.

Pro-tip: Any attacks made on enemies that are still in their death animation still count as valid attacks that can activate all kinds of buffs and what not.

I think this is a really cool build. What I would change is putting the Sacrificial Axe in your left hand while two handing the blade. This allows you to basically have a 5th talisman because killing enemies will restore FP while it is equipped. Then you can swap out the Taker’s Cameo talisman for the Ritual Sword talisman because you will basically be at full health most of the time from spamming Waterfowl Dance and benefit from the extra damage

I've tried this build but personally thought it isn't that viable only due to the fact the you have little poise when performing waterfowl dance and seem to get knocked out of it a bit to much, personally the blasphemous sword seems better option for healing as it's L2 heals on hits rather than kills or combos. But regardless loving the vids and keep up the good work!

I did some math for how much health each health upon kill restoring item gave, and this is what I got. Starting from the least health gained is the repent gods curved sword which gave about 4.2% of my health back. Next in line is the takers cameo which gave 5% of my health back. After that is the blasphemous blade which game about 7.2% of my health back. The last one I tested is the great rune of rykard, which gave about 12.4% of my health back. It should also be noted that all of these will stack with no diminishing returns, including the blasphemous blade and the serpent gods curved sword. In total, which all of these items, I gained about 28.5% of my health back each kill. I hope this helped! It was pretty interesting to see how all of this stuff works.

Having just gone through that fight to get that Katana I can say if you have a bleed build with life leash and that Talisman that restores HP per hit you will never die. She kicked my ass all over the place with the that move lmao.

In the cave, you can easily kill the boss by finding the snails that summon the godskin pair and killing them. They have little hp and when dead the godskin dissapear. Thanks for the vid, nice build.

I like to use Ancestral Spirit's Horn instead of Shard of Alexander; may not do as much damage, but can use skills for a bit longer and is especially useful with groups.

Finally someone that shows a build in late game areas, instead of using only in the early areas
this is a great build

You can also use Serpent-God's Curved swored way lighter and has the same healing effect as rykards sword

I have a super similar build to this that uses dual Serpent-Gods Curved Swords with Claw Talisman subbed in for Taker’s Cameo on boss fights. I also have Clinging Bone in the back pocket for an emergency heal with iframes. Great minds think alike!

It was a nice build. Really good on trash mobs with low poise unleash your inner anime. But the problem im having is, in the late game a lot of the enemies have larger health pool and poise they can tank it and hit you right back while you're doing your 12 hits combo so i think im gonna respect back to the faith taker's flame knock down and nuke everything. I do appreciate the build and the awesome content! 👍

with this type of setup i would recommend a great stars with prelate's charge instead of the hand of malenia, every tick of damage is considered as a single attack and so...you can probably guess the outcome when used in combo with the baby godskin
