Last week we talked about all the times Jean Grey has died in comics, and then the comment section derailed into whether or not Wolverine can ever die from hunger. So today, we're mostly discussing Jean Grey and Phoenix stuff, but also your theories on if Wolverine's healing factor would help him survive starvation!

You guys leave some AMAZING comments on our videos! Every Monday, Scott replies and responds to them in Tales From The Comments!

Sorry for the quality of this video. My main computer is in the shop, and I left my mic stand at a friend's house. So I had the decision of either breaking out the good camera and mic, or just doing it on my phone. As you can see, laziness won.

None of the deaths count.... Except Ben Parker

that thing about wolverine eating himself to avoid starving and then regenerating again doesn't work, the body uses more energy to regenerate than he can get from the flesh it eats, processing the food takes energy, regenerating cells takes energy, so it doesn't work. "oh but wolverine is different" nope, if he can avoid starving by eating himself he can avoid starving by doing nothing, he still keeps more energy that way anyway.

Eating parts of yourself to avoid starvation won't work. Firstly the consumption (especially raw flesh) is less efficient than keeping the flesh within your organism and secondly, regenerating tissue takes a lot of protein/calories/etc. Since eating your own flesh doesn't add, but subtracts energy from your body, especially if you want your tissue to regenerate, it's smarter to eat another human than your own arm. but then again, Deadpool and Wolverine are immortal by popularity, not a healing factor.

I'd love to see you do a video on Alfred's earnings as the Wayne's butler.

See I always assumed that Alfred earned nothing, that as Bruce's guardian/father figure he lived comfortably off the Wayne fortune rather than drawing a salary and his status as a "butler" was merely an arrangement he had with the Waynes so he could immigrate to America.

I'd love to hear your thoughts.

Well, eating your own flesh is still gross, no matter how you slice it.

So If a death is a death, then what about when a person "dies" in real life to only be resuscitated minutes later? Does that mean there have been people who have literally lived more than once? If her body was destroyed, I believe it should count, however if she or any other person can be revived, it can't fit the definition of dying. It should be finite in some form.

wolverine doesn't need to do all that, your body burns calories, then fat, then your muscles which is why when people starve to death they literally become skin and bones. If it breaks down his own body for substance it will heal and come back so he doesn't need to torture himself like that

It's long been my head-canon that the X-gene simply controls access to an external energy source - and then the individual mutant's individual physiology determines how their body makes use of that energy and manifests it as powers. So Cyclops' energy blasts are just one of the most visible manifestations of this energy - Wolverine's body uses it to replace missing matter, literally allowing him to regrow from a charred skeleton.

I love how existentialism in comic books extends to what does and does not count as "a death".

Maybe wolverine had to eat his arm to stave of the hunger, which isn't just a physical state but a mental one

Scott can you please make a book about your head canon? When you ad something write it down and when you have enough stuff release as Nerdsync merchandise. I would by 10.

I love the news letter. The articles about the creation of the Hulk and color theory were awesome. Very informative just like the videos.

+NerdSync I'm pretty sure you have the analogy wrong. Her living is her continuing to smoke, and her dying is quitting, so if she smokes for a while, then quits for a day or so, then starts back up again, did she really quit?

Funny, when he said "If a smoker quits smoking and a week later, picks up the habit again, did he really quit smoking...." That reminded me of the time I asked one of my fellow soldiers while I was in the military if he would ever consider to stop smoking.  He told he  quits smoking between cigarettes. lol!

The way I square all mutant powers in my head (because where the hell does the energy for Cyclops' power come from?!) is to assume that the Marvel universe has an underlying energy source that ours doesn't. The mutant gene allows people to be conduits for that energy and it changes their physiology in various ways.
So Wolverine could not heal like he does without eating TONS unless there was an external source providing energy for his cells. Scott however can not fuel his cells with this energy and can only release it through his eyes.
