I knew a guy who had a new V8 jag after literally dumping his previous car in a quarry by driving it over the edge with a brick on the accelerator and then hitch hiking into the jag dealership. Eccentric guy. He later got a V12 XJS second hand, like 5 years old when he got it. Worked as an oil rigger. He used to park the V8 around the back of the welfare office, go in and get his cheque, then get picked up by his boss around the back and go to work for cash in hand.... like I said, quite a guy... he told me once he was in a pub in the north of Scotland when these oil big wigs landed out back in a chopper, got out with HUGE cigars and proceeded to get a drink at the same pub. Kidnapped twice in Nigeria, missed an IRA bombing by 5 minutes, and then got held hostage in a building by Al Qaeda while the had the building rigged to blow, after killing 2 of his bosses. What a life.

My 1987 xj12: 7.1s from 0-60 mph (about 100kmh). When launched from a standstill in 1st gear it will roar to 110kmh at 6000 rpm and then the gearbox will force gear change to 2nd gear with the effect of shortly spinning the rearwheels. But honestly, these cars were made for quiet and effortless wafting.

That's the thing, I love an auto trans with the ol' v12, it's just slick, effortlessly smooth and luxury. It wasn't designed to hot rod and people always dog on it because it lacked "power". I did eventually do a 6 speed manual swap and it transformed the car; but honestly, with an auto it's truly what it's meant to be.

Great looking cars with a lovely smooth V12. A shame the performance is held back by the crap 3 speed automatic gearbox which sadly were the norm in the era when these cars were made.
