SOUTH POLE | NIGHT IN ANTARCTICA

Показать описание
The South Pole is one of the coldest, driest and harshest places on earth. The Aurora Australis can be seen together with the core of the milkyway only here in Antarctica. Temperatures below -70°C/-95°F during the polar night are not uncommon. Together with strong winds and exceptional aridity this is one of the hardest places to shoot timelapse in. Special equipment has been constructed and modified to keep the cameras running.
Shot by Robert Schwarz, CMB-Observatory (Cosmic Microwave Backgroud) operator and technician at the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station.
Post-Production, Edit and Stock-footage management by Martin Heck, Timestorm Films
Curated by Christoph Malin and Martin Heck
Production coordination by Christoph Malin
Music: "Diana" by Tony Anderson licensed through musicbed:
Edited with Adobe LR, AE, Davinci Resolve and LRTimelapse:
Shot on Canon 6D and 5DIII cameras

FAQ: there is ZERO air-traffic over the south pole. The streaks you can see are for the most part satellites on polar orbits.

This left me speechless and for some odd reason a bit emotional. I can’t put into words how magical this is. I don’t believe humans understand how lucky they are to live on such a breathtaking planet suited exactly for them. Thank you for sharing this. What a dream to actually be there to experience such beauty.

Back in the late 80's I spent a year working at McMurdo Station, then another year at Amundsen-Scott Station at the geographical South Pole. We were still living under the big-o Geodesic Dome back then. Wintered over at both McMurdo & the Pole. Watching the Aurora Australis (Southern Lights) dancing in the night sky, all eleven weeks of 24/7 night sky, was truly a sight to behold. Hell, even on the rare occasions the Southern Light sat out the dark skies over Antarctica were spectacular.

There's really no way to properly describe the quiet white magnificence of Antarctica, so I won't even try, but after 2 straight years my adventure down on the ice began losing it's luster. Like always, I felt the urge to move on to a new adventure. Boy did I move on.... all the way to the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Bagged a gig working at the U.S. Army Ballistic Missile Test Range on a tropical island. Kwajalein Lagoon in the Marshall Islands. From blinding white ice to blinding white sand beaches where the turquoise sea was 84 degrees & the weather was a constant year High of 88....Low of 76....Partly Chance of Rain. The night sky took on a whole new look. Looking south, the Southern Cross dominated the view. Looking north, the North Star shone just above the horizon. Kwajalein is one of the few locations on the planet where both can be seen simply by a turn of the head. Stayed in the Marshall's five years.... then off to Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria & Cameroon to be exact. Damn, I've had such a wonderful, adventurous life as an expat I almost feel almost.

Auroras are my favorite natural phenomenon. The best display I have ever seen in person was in the vicinity of Fairbanks, Alaska. My wife and I sometimes go aurora hunting in northern Minnesota (on rare cloudless nights). Thank you for producing such a beautiful film. I watched this several times before commenting. Your channel is such an inspiration!

Oh. My. Gosh. That is really one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen. Sometimes I can’t believe how lucky I am to be alive.

When you look at this and take it in, every cell in your body knows that this is what we are. We are this.

Amazing, never seen sky like that before - the movement of the stars, the Milky Way, the colours of the auroras. Privileged to be able to watch.

I just saw this magnificent display of the Auroras. The orchestration of the musics with the lights is spot on. Couldn’t of picked a better instrumentation of classical music while the Aurora’s are dancing in the horizon and above you. I wish I could’ve been there to experience it but I have your beautiful video to watch over and over again. Thank you so much! Keep Chasing!!
