AIS might be the most important piece of equipment for long distance solo sailing. This is how i installed my new tracking companion!

Solder the PL259, you can’t be sure of a good connection, causing noise in the receiver and potentially reduced transmission power (and over heating in the transmitter).
All antennas should be outside of the cabin and as high as possible.
Any cable entries into the cabin should be via vertical surfaces to reduce potential pooling of water and seepage.

Great install.
When.you finalize your pl-259 dont forget to seal it properly both using shrink hose and electrical tape on.the outside.
Also, solder the shrink connections for extra good connection.

The doghouse antenna should be fine, there are so many satellites to choose from it is unlikely that it could not see the minimum to get a fix.

I believe that all AIS transponders can be put into "silent" mode (receive only). Great video!

I wanted to suggest an AIS a couple of videos ago when you asked what to add to your boat, but I did not do that because I thought it would not fit your budget. Maybe the cables are this long because it's better to put the antenna and GPS sensor somewhere high up ? 🤔

Thanks for sharing. I was really waiting for this kind of stuff. It seems doable, so I could mount it myself. 😊
It looks like a sign of a jurney is coming soon? 😉

not soldering the tip is particularly dangerous to a device that transmit such as the vhf antenna connection on ais, as a poor transmit connection can cause tx power to reflect back into the electrical device and burn it out. if its just rx such as gps ok temporarily.

Hope you keep the GPS cable long until you actually test it at sea.👍✌️😊🙏🏼⛵️⛵️⛵️

Don't forget to solder the connector onto your coaxial cable. It will corrode and cause problems if you don't. MH

No soldering iron, try heating a screwdriver on the stove hold it with the solder and a bit of flux to solder the joint etc,

You have to get good at soldering. No vinyl tape.
