“We have an issue”
“Roger”
“Are we in your way?”
“Affirm, sir” 🤣🤣🤣

Seriously, this video a good example of pilots requesting clarification of unclear transmissions rather than bumbling through the approach.

I'm glad they actually declared an emergency, instead of waffling about it

Pilot: ...requesting immediate de-scent !

ATC: "You are no. 2 in the sequence"
Pilot: "Roger"
Copilot, off mic: "man I wish we could land sooner"
pilot, smirking: "mayday, mayday, mayday"

74 Crew tells a story of a pilot who shouldn't have trusted a fart. I wonder if this is the recording of that incident?

There’s no odor that can’t be neutralized by the absolutely gorgeous island weather at St Maarten!

Glad they declared an emergency instead of dancing around it. Even if it isn’t the smell of smoke or burning, it doesn’t hurt to be cautious. If you declare an emergency and nothing comes of it, great! Rather declare an emergency and it not being serious than take any chances. Just get checklists done and get on the ground.

I was working as an air france ground staff on the ramp that day. Excellent work from the crew and the passengers came off the plane like nothing ever happened 😂

For anyone that doesn't know, this is one of the most spectacular approaches in all of aviation. Runway 10 butts up against the very popular Maho Beach in Sint Maarten (Dutch spelling [this airport is on the Dutch side of the Island] - the other side of the island of Saint Martin [French Spelling] is French). Heavies have to fly super-low to land. It creates the impression you can reach out and touch the plane. In photos it looks almost fake. I would highly recommend searching out videos and pictures if you aren't able to make it there in person. I was fortunate enough as a kid on two separate vacations to be swimming in the ocean and chilling on the beach while 747s and other heavies seemed so close that you could grab the landing gear with your bare hands. What an amazing experience.

Cudos to that ATC, just straight out "do u have visual on the runway" and cleared him right in on visual approach. Gotta be close to a record for getting an emergency aircraft down.

..."The number of passengers on the ground." Interesting description. Luckily the answer seems to be zero.

The name is not St Marteen but St Martin or St Maarten (French or Dutch part)

And that's why you shouldn't take the Surstromming Challenge in an airplane.

Very well done by pilots and controllers. Thank you for making and posting.

He who smelt it dealt it so clearly it was the pilot who broke wind and wanted to cover it up by declaring an emergency

Mayday mayday someone lit a blunt in the cockpit. We're gonna need some dorritos and mountain dew.

Where was the smell coming from what was causing it

My instructor and I were flying a 172 just out of 100 hr. We were flying from KLNS to KESN. We smelled smoke and he took control. We landed in 58N . We opened the cowling and he shined hi light towards the firewall. He reached in and pulled out a smoldering roll of paper towels. We guessed the mechanic left it there. From then on I was very detailed on my preflights..
