Gravitas: Can you be asked to keep your web cam switched on your shift?

A remote worker based out of the Netherlands was fired from a U.S-based software company after he refused to keep his web cam switched on throughout his shift. The worker moved a Dutch court that went on to rule in his favour. Are employers legally allowed to monitor you? Or Is it a breach of privacy?

I think the employees should have to keep their web cam on in the bathroom, so we can see if they're rubbing one out on company time.

This is just the logical progression from truck drivers being told they have to have a device in their truck to track them, and if they stop for any reason and automated voice comes over a speaker saying "Why have you stopped? Why have you stopped...." over and over nonstop until you start rolling again.

A company has the right to have their policies and procedures in place. if you don't want to deal with it move on to another company. They are not invading his privacy while he's on their time.

He doesn't have to be monitored, and they don't have to employ him.

They don’t need a camera on IF they provide the computer, and internet, used they can easily just track the keyboard and web usage. No different than tracking a company car.

Shame on the Managers who ask their team members to switch on camera. These kind of managers don't trust anyone & also doesn't trust themselves. These kind of managers are generally fit for nothing. Criminal case has to be registered against these kind of managers & the company too. Human rights has to fight against these kind of managers & companies.
