Hulk to me is best when it’s built as a tragedy, I loved the 70s series, I though the 2003 movie was well done in presenting that story, same with the 2008 movie, where Banner is a loner who hates being Hulk. In the Avengers I thought Ruffalo presented that well early on, and the new riff of him being able to control Hulk somewhat in the 2011 and 2015 movies, yet still not liking being a giant rampaging monster, then the MCU got funny and the Hulk has not felt the same since. Don’t get me wrong I get a kick out of Smart Hulk in End Game even though it’s a little cringey, and Hulk in Ragnarok is fun, but it’s been a while since that the aura of the Hulk has been missing, The Hulk is best when Banner is sad and the most sympathetic character.

When you really look at hulk as a character he is a modern version of the story of dr Jekyll and mr hyde. Hulk is meant to be human rage and impulse at its absolute peak combined with unimaginable strength. So making a hulk smart and reserve really goes against what his character is supposed to be.
