Homemade Spike / Stake Anvil and Forge Update

I just can't find an anvil in my area, certainly not one that I'd want to own. So, I decided to use an old 14# hammer head as the base for a spike anvil. Stake anvils are, as I understand it, one of the oldest types of anvils. This was a relatively easy build that I think would work for just about anyone looking for an affordable alternative to buying a full sized anvil.

I was iffy about subscribing to you, this is the first video I have watched of yours. I just pushed the button once I saw the bellows! Cool stuff man.

It's interesting that you thought of using a hammer head, because that's exactly the idea I thought of (I've been thinking of dabbling in some simple blacksmithing, so I want to find something simple and dirt cheap).

Great minds think alike ;-)

You now have your own forge.. Melt some iron and CAST YOUR OWN!! I'd love to see a video of that. Build a wood mock-up, then make a sand mold of it. Melt yourself a giant load of iron, and pour!

might have been a better idea to also cut the wedge off the back of the sledge head when you cut the front off, making a more stable surface to weld to and less chance of it bending off with hard impact.

And you could fit an handle to it and make one whopper of a mallet.
All joking aside i enjoyed watching and thats a very clever way to make do until a permanent solution is found. Thanks for sharing.

Nice stake anvil. I think I'm about to try to make one for easier bladesmithing. My big anvil works good but I think I want a more compact setup for small blades. Thanks for sharing.

I was having a go with a flat-ish rock

You could try to get some old rail road track to make your own anvil too.

it won't happen in a single strike, but many will eventually do it. I can see this gradually bending over until you start to glace off the side. would have been much better if you had make a flat, stable base.

I uses a sledg hammer head for a while. The little guy was only an 8 pounder so I couldnt move alot of material bu tree it was great for making gaff hooks and fire pokers. Im more of a bladesmith than a blacksmith anyway.

curious as to how the weld held up?, to me it seems like side loading it would break the weld, i'm still working on setting my RR anvil in a stump, though the re purposed sledge hammer head isn't a bad idea.

Thanks for the video.  I need to make some stakes.  Question: Why didn't you make that a double action bellows?  Pull the top half down while the bottom half goes up with a see-saw bar, y'know?  Double the air with the same effort.
