The issue is that the green compound will sharpen the steel but not the carbides, the carbides are what make the super steels super. By removing the matrix around the carbides you will end up with the carbides at the edge tearing out. The diamond pastes sharpen the carbides at the same rate as the surrounding steel. I make knives, mostly kitchen knives in MagnaCut. I also have pocket knives in S30V, Maxamet, MagnaCut, Hap40, CPM REX-121. Those steels really respond to the diamond pastes where the green stuff doesn't even touch them.

I use 3.5 micron, 1 micron and .5 micron on balsa wood strops.

I have a beavercraft strop and compound. I absolutely love it. I'm not a good example though because I'm primarily sharpening cv or cs knives. I hope you have a fantastic day today Dave

Hey Dave. I have been using the diamond pastes from Lee Valley. The trick is to apply a little bit then use a flat edge like a ruler to spread it out. A little goes a long way. It makes a big difference if you let the strop dry overnight before using it. It should feel quite dry to the touch. I am sure you will see a difference in using the paste. It will turn grey/black very quickly with metal left behind. You won't have to re-apply very often. Not until it stops working. Hope this helps

Very timely thank you. I was just researching before purchasing some diamond compound. I have sharp knives but seeking cutting a paper towel level of sharp.

Thanks, Canadian Dave ❤
Very interesting. I had the same results with my diamond stropping compound. I think it definitely makes a difference.
All the best English Dave 😉

Good video, brother. I've often wondered about this stuff. Um, I don't think the kids have said that since i was a kid, lol. You can definitely hear the difference in the sounds of the cut. Have a great day!

I’ve used the green compound and it has worked very well. I’ve seen others use the liquid stuff and wondered if it was really that much better. I’m sold now. I’ll have to get some. Excellent video!

Diamond Amsterdam CBN compounds are great on modern steels. S35VN still works on the green but forget about S90V. You need the new compounds with new steels.

Stroppy stuff is really good give that a try. Also it’s color coated so you know which micron is on what strop

Interesting video. I have never tried a compound on my strop. I always wondered if it was just a scam. I think I will have to try a compound now. Thanks for sharing and have a great blessed day.

Not a super steel kinda guy. But any 400 series or 1095 is my thing. Just a simple man

I am really glad you made this video! I have been curious about different compounds. I only have experience using the regular green compound. I have had good luck with it stropping CPM S30V, CPM S45VN, and CPM M4. Maybe the diamond paste just takes less passes on the strop? I don't know.

That was cool. Nope I have a few super steels and have not started to need to sharpen so when i do I’ll try your method .

You used twice as much of the diamond paste as was needed! A little goes a long way! The paste is a much finer grit than the green compound, and therefore will actually polish the blade edge! If you really want a high mirror polish use .5 micron paste! Good luck! 🤔👍
