Thank you very much. You just saved me $150 in a replacement Tach. I found another little trick is to break it loose with a small piece of wire first, then put an air compressor nozzle up to the hole. Needle spins round and round, exercising the dickens out of it.

Your 2 minute video saved me $100 and much time. I have a 2005 Four Winns and had a sticky tach at 1500. Did what you suggested and it works. Tested with a 9 volt battery before I put it in the boat. Goes to zero now every time. Will try it in the boat when it warms up. Happy boating!

I did the same with my faria tacho but using a bamboo skewer to work the needle back and forth and it solved the problem of the needle stuck between 0 and 10 RPM. Still works well after 6 months.

My 2005 wellcraft had 3 gauges that were not working. I knew i had correct power to them after i diagnosed them. I priced out $500 in gauges because my OCD would not let me replace just 2 or 3 and the rest be different.

I just bench tested the 3 gauges after trying this and they work. That was a relief!

If I could find my Cobalt tach I would buy one, but I can't. I found your video and just wanted to say how much "I love you". Thank you very much. You are awesome!!

I had this same problem on my 2005 Bayliner 185. Did these steps had it working in 15 minutes. If it doesn't last long or cause the tachometer to completely die fairly soon its to early to say, but for now money saved and I have a functioning tachometer.

Got a little excited after reading all the success everyone was having with this simple but effective DIY method unfortunately my Faria Tach must have a different issue or problem with the wiring on the engine because sadly this didn’t work fit me 😔
1973 65hp Merc it could be anything lol

i literally took mine out of a scrap pile and have been using it for years (in a CAR). the correct method to use before drilling a hole is to use a magnet around the outside. not sure where I learned that but see if it works for you, good luck

I tried this with my speedo and tacho. It worked on the speedo but the tacho won't budge with revs. it goes to zero with power applied but stays there regardless of rpm. I checked the tacho sender signal with a multimeter at the plug and there's a voltage on it around 8v at idle from memory...guessing I might require a new tacho! Thanks for the tip.

I had a cheap tachometer and it stopped working I bought a new 1 about 90 something dollars and it's not working either so it wasn't the gauge I checked all the wires and nothing is not connected what could be my issue?

Do you know what that black clips that holds the tachometer in place is called? Mine broke cause it's plastic trying to see what there called so I can look for new one's.

My inner lens is dirty how do you remove the lens... it also has a chrome seal like yours. My guess is i need to replace the whole gauge? Any ideas? No screws on back, nothing.

Thank you having the same problem with exact same unit. Did it work after putting back in the boat?

Did you plug the hole you made after, I would be worried about moisture fogging the glass !
