How to Use Hand Signals For a Driver's License Test

For the purposes of a road test in a car, light truck, or motorcycle you may be quizzed on your knowledge of hand signals. You must know the hand signal for right and left turns, and for slowing down or stopping.

In this video, we demonstrate the 3 hand signals that you need to know for the purposes of a road test.

• Left arm extended straight out indicates that you are turning left
• Left arm out and bent upward at the elbow indicates that you are turning right
• Left arm out and bent downward at the elbow indicated that you are slowing or stopping

These hand signals will be used for drivers operating motorcycles, cars and trucks if the lights have stopped working, or even a horse and carriage. Also, hand signals can be used on slow-moving vehicles--farm equipment, industrial vehicles, construction equipment--to indicated to other traffic that they are turning or slowing.

Drivers must know their hand signals and watch for these when around other vehicles.

When I took my driver's test in 1976 we used blinkers not hand signals. I passed. With slowing down it's called break lights. You should always keep a car length between you and the car in front of you. Because if you crash into the car in front of you it will always be your fault. At least that's the way it was back when the world was logical. The world today is down right NUTS

question pertaining to the slowing/stop signal. Would this be necessary in all scenarios where you would need to brake? I understand when making a sudden stop or pedestrian crossing but what about other situations e.g. At a stop sign or traffic light or stopping before entering a roundabout. Would it still be necessary then to use the stop hand signal

Great video. The one thing missing from this, do you need to use both the hand signals and electronic signals for the purpose of the driving test or just the hand signals. Also I noted in your mock driving test you use only electronic signals.

You don't seem to know left from right... and on a motorcycle the brake is on the right so how on earth are you gona use your right hand to signal
