How do the lungs work? How does breathing occur? How does the respiratory system function? Watch this video to find out!
The lungs are vital organs in the respiratory system, responsible for exchanging oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment. Located in the chest cavity, the lungs work in tandem with the diaphragm, a muscle that facilitates breathing. When you inhale, the diaphragm contracts and moves downward, expanding the chest cavity and creating negative pressure that draws air into the lungs. The air travels through the trachea, bronchi, and bronchioles, finally reaching tiny air sacs called alveoli.
Alveoli are where the magic happens; they are surrounded by a network of capillaries where oxygen from the air passes into the blood, and carbon dioxide from the blood is expelled into the alveoli to be exhaled. This gas exchange is crucial for supplying oxygen to the body's cells for energy production and removing the waste product, carbon dioxide.
Breathing is regulated by the respiratory center in the brainstem, which adjusts the rate and depth of breathing based on the body's needs, such as during exercise or rest. This intricate system ensures that the body maintains proper oxygen and carbon dioxide levels, crucial for overall health and homeostasis.
