Installing Linux on Windows 8 UEFI Secure Boot System

How to install Linux onto a Windows 8 UEFI Secure Boot system.
From late 2012 onwards all PC Manufacturers wanting to receive a Windows 8 compatible sticker must implement Secure Boot on their systems, this prevents most Linux Distros from being installed.

At time of recording (02 Feb 2013) there are only three Linux Distros certified by Microsoft to install on a Secure Boot system, these are: Ubuntu 12.10, Ubuntu 13.04, and Fedora 18.
Canonical and Red Hat have paid the MS Fee to allow their systems to be installed on and able to boot with UEFI Secure boot.

If you are trying to install another Linux distribution you might be able to disable the Secure Boot in the UEFI Bios, and I show an example with an ASUS FM2 motherboard.

I was able to get Ubuntu on my laptop, but now I can't access Windows 8. Grub says its missing the sector. To make everything worse, no matter what I try to install grub, it does not load at all. I installed it into a USB and now I need that USB to boot or my laptop is a brick. At least it'll suck for anyone who tries to steal it.

I have a question if you might answer. I have an ASUS computer as well and my bios looks exactly like the one in the video so when you switch secure boot to "other OS" is that considered disabling secure boot? When I switch it to "other OS" I believe I saw somewhere that secure boot is still enabled? I am very very unhappy with ASUS and how it seems they have made it extremely difficult to basically make any changes to the bios. The combination of ASUS with an Nvidia graphics card makes for an extremely incompatible linux computer.

Thank you for your videos. I have a toshiba laptop with preinstalled windows 8, uefi, fast start up and secure boot enabled. Would I have any problems booting if i do a partition and install ubuntu 13.10, without changing any of the above options?

Hi Quidsup, great video, but a small question. I recently got an Asus with the UEFI protocols. I followed all the steps shown in the Ubuntu Forum to try and dual install Ubuntu 12.10 and Windows 7, but had no luck (and a three hour restore W7 to take the biscuit) - any suggestions?

Hi !
When you say that Ubuntu is compatible with UEFI, does it include all ubuntu based distros such as Mint, Zorin, Voyager etc..?
I tried booting with Ubuntu 12.10. Ok if I switch the UEFI to Legacy on my Vaio S13 (Q4 2012). But with UEFI enabled: "non operating system found". How did you manage the installation ?
