Congress having no idea how the internet works, part II.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai was brought in for a hearing with members of Congress about political bias in search results. But as the hearing went on, Congress members including Rep. Ted Poe, Rep. Lamar Smith, Rep. Zoe Lofgren, Rep. Steve King, and Rep. Steve Cohen have no idea how the Internet and technology works. They asked about movement tracking, political bias in search results, how Donald Trump's image became associated with a search of the word 'idiot,' unrelated issues with the iPhone, manipulating search, an online school, and more.

This looks like a "help desk" for senior citizens rather than a hearing.

Worst part isn't that they don't know, but that they're condescending, arrogant, think they're the genius in the room and don't even let other people answer their questions

ironically, all of these questions could be answered if they just googled it

These people for SURE went home that day and were like, “well we sure showed him who’s boss. Another successful day in the office.”

This is why there needs to be term limits (and age limits) for politicians.

Think about it: How can anyone make decisions about the world we live in if they can’t even comprehend it?

“We inhale the oxy-“
“My time is up, and I disagree”

The guy talking about tracking really bugged me “ITS YES OR NO” yelling at the guy. Its so much more complicated than these people think it is simple.

“Does Google do this?”
“No it does not.”
“I think it can.”

Age is no excuse for ignorance, especially when you have people's lives in your hands.

“Is there a place we can ask questions and learn more about how Google works?”

Yes. *It’s called Google*

“You make $100, 000, 000 a year you ought to be able to answer that question”
He did answer the question.. and the reason you simply didn’t understand his answer is the exact SAME REASON that he makes $100, 000, 000 a year and you do not 🤷‍♂️

The guy at the start wouldn’t even let him answer.

"My time is up, let me just say I disagree."
It's not like that you can't just disagree with a fact wtf

one of the worst parts is that there are legitimate questions they should have been asking, and _none_ of them are about the possibility of an employee who works for google manually editing search results. old people misunderstand this all the time. The sheer scale of google results just doesn’t allow that to be feasible. It’s algorithmic biases that can actually undermine democratic systems, but I would be surprised if these guys could change the brightness on an ipad, let alone understand what an algorithm is.
