My elderly mom plants beans by taking a stick, and using it to to make a small hole in the ground. She then drops 3 seeds in it and slides her foot across to cover the hole with a bit of soil. Walks along poking, dropping and covering. No bending whatsoever. Smart. Always plant 3 beans together, she advices. Her harvests are awesome.

I have been absolutely scouring YouTube and such for gardening, farming, homesteading info for about 5 years if not more.
You are the most quality per minute.
You don't front load a lot of personal bs, you don't dance around the topic, and you don't overload the videos.
You have real information, researched and tested. We can see that in the background, hardly needs mentioning.
Also, you've got the best sound track lol
Thanks for the great info and please keep making them!

When covering the drainage holes, rather than screen or tape or stones, consider a used coffee filter. Sand stays in, excess moisture goes right through. For bigger pots use a hand spray bottle of water to wet the filters so they conform to, and stick to the pot until you drop your soil in to hold them in place. By end of season the filters will disappear. Just a thought.

Been gardening all my life and I have never heard the words "inoculate" and "seeds" in the same sentence before. I had no idea. The world is such a cool classroom sometimes. Bless you

Another suggestion for protecting young seedlings, either plant them in mini solo style cups (from the $1.25 tree) with the bottom cut off or put the cup over the seedlings, bottom cut off also. This plastic cup protects the seedlings from being eaten down to the soil level. Those cups can be used for several years.🦋🦋🦋🦋🦋

Well thank you for the tip on growing peas in sand to get better starts… I was always under the impression that peers didn’t like their roots disturbed so I’ve never tried this. I fight with the birds every single summer and I never get to harvest much of my favourite crop. I’ll give it a shot!

To cover the holes in the bottom of the pan, use old clothes/linens that are 100% cotton, linen, wool or other natural fiber.

"Bob's your uncle", LOL. I've never heard that expression, but it sounds natural enough.

Oh my GOODNESS an organic, safe for other wildlife earwig defense 😭 Tears of joy. I had a lot of issues with my first year of gardening, but one of my biggest was ear wigs and everything I found for them inhibited other, good wildlife too.. Thank you! 😁

I've been using your sand method to start all my seeds, and now have been using it to propagate cuttings. I use paper towel rolls cut in 3 and put them all into a pot, filling all the columns with sand. It has been working out so well! Thank you for all of your awesome tips, you are the BEST!

Dear Dan , I LOVE your show ; have been watching it for a long time, and have learned MANY tricks from you . You ARE a tricky guy !!!
Wanted to share one of my tricks with you . ... disposable coffee filters work wonderfully well , to keep the soil from seeping through the holes in the planting containers . They are designed to allow liquids through, and not break down . Paper towels can work the same way, also , but are not quite as sturdy . I also use this trick when transplanting houseplants, to contain the soil where it belongs !! Thank you for sharing your wisdoms with us . They are always helpful . 🌸💕

Had a miserable time with rolly pollys in my garden, stripping everything down to the ground. I found the Sluggo product that I was using on slugs worked like magic! YEs! Now I apply it around all my young seedlings. Last years issue was rabbits…so everything has to be fenced in with chicken wire. It’s always something when you garden, squirrels, deer, bean beetles…the list is endless! Interesting about raising beans and peas as transplants. I had always understood them to be not fond of being transplanted. Will have to try it.

My advice for preventing birds and other animals are;
1. Used chop sticks, put in ground facing different directions. Like little death spears.
2. Try using a plastic owl. I keep one on my front porch to keep birds from coming and pooping everywhere.
3. Tie pieces of caution tape to sticks, then stick them in the ground all around the plants. It will deter all animals, including birds.

You use a hard way to shuck your beans. I use two different methods.
One..I put the dry pods in a pillow case and throw into the dryer on "air dry" and tumble for a while.
Two.. I lay a plastic tarp on the driveway and lay the dry whole bean plants in the plastic. I drape the two sides of the tarp over the dry plants. I then just roll the car back and forth over the tarp. I can then easily take out the plant stems/leaves, then after that pour the bean pods and chafe back and forth in the wind between to large bins. The bean chafe will blow out in the wind . Just like I do with the dryer beans. It do it on the lawn and then just mow the bean chafe later.

My ancestors planted corn, beans and squash together. It was called the 3 sisters a system of interplanting. Thanks for your knowledge. Peace!

Thank you for this video. I'm new to gardening (Covid made me do it). I'm trying to grow peas for the first time. I thought squirrels had dug the seeds up because only one plant in my row survived. This happened twice and finally by my third planting (protected by hardware cloth) I have a row of Sugar Snaps growing. After seeing your video I realize it could have been birds.

Thank you! I am determined that the squirrels and birds are NOT going to eat my bean and pea seeds this year. I will protect the seedlings as well. Definitely going to try the floating cover.
