Subjects and Predicates

Subjects and predicates are the essential, most basic building blocks of a sentence. They’re nothing fancy, just beginner-level grammar. Before you learn any of the more sophisticated grammatical concepts, you have to know what a subject and predicate are. Also, you must know what they are to avoid writing grammatical gaffes like sentence fragments, subject-verb disagreements, and dangling modifiers.

You can add things like subordinate clauses, attach them to other sentences to make compound sentences. They’re the steel scaffolding of grammar. Once you have a good, solid sentence, you can hang all sorts of shiny things on it and it will stand up straight and tall.

Here is my explanation on "Subjects and Predicates" for people who didn't understand the video! Hope you read it carefully and you can ask questions under my comment :)

Subjects are nouns who/which do an action in a sentence. Here is an example.

*John painted the fence in his back yard.*

In this sentence, John is the subject because he is the one who painted the fence in his backyard. Do you get it?

OK, let's move to Predicates.

Predicates are verbs that follow the action of the Subject. Here is an example.

*Gianna swept the bread crumbs on the floor.*

In this sentence, "swept the bread crumbs on the floor" is the predicate because it is the action that Gianna did.
