Swimmer Lia Thomas clarifies in a new interview with ABC News & ESPN that she did not transition to win races. "Trans people, if you can believe it, don't transition for athletics," she said. "We transition to be happy and authentic and our true selves." In March 2022, Thomas won the 500 yard women's freestyle final at the NCAA swimming championships. She was met with support, but also with backlash as people still can't wrap their heads around transgender athletes competing in sports.
