I’m a guy and I was a competitive swimmer for most of my youth, right up until the end of high school. I was part of a squad and trained five times a week, four mornings and one afternoon, each hour-long sessions. That along with week-long training camps during the holidays where all we would do is train and sleep, train and sleep, train and sleep. Most swim training is done in the morning, so competitive swimmers almost never get the luxury of sleeping in; they’re up by 5.30am and in the water by 6am. It’s a huge amount of time and dedication, and I never even approached the Olympic level; I competed at the national level a couple of times but I mostly did it to keep fit. To reach the Olympics and compete against the best of the best (in any discipline) requires more time, dedication and sacrifice than the average person could possibly comprehend, and to have the place that you earned stolen from you due to an unbridgeable physical gap is despicable. If they want to make a separate category for trans athletes to compete then fine, but don’t put them up against women.
