100% agreed. The fundamentals of BJJ that we learned 20 years ago are not the fundamentals of today. Movements, framing and finding the calmness during the fight should be the fundamentals of BJJ

“Dont focus on techniques” I can totally do that

Tried Jiu Jitsu for the first time 2 days ago. The feeling of being out of breath and just having another grown adult laying across my abdomen was probably one of the most uncomfortable physical feelings I've ever had. At one point I had to tap just to get a breath while the other guy was a black belt just patiently laying in side control.

Great advice. Not enough emphasis is spent on these parts of Ju Jitsu.. especially the breathing aspect! OSS thanks as always

This is such good advice. In only my fourth class, I tore a ligament in my elbow trying to brute my way out of an Americana. Granted, at the time I didn't know how to escape it. However if I just breathed and focused on these basic principles I would still be on the mats. Kind of glad I learnt the hard way early. Only about two weeks until I can train again. Looking forward to rolling again but this time in a much more calm and humble manner.

Add to that beginners should learn a basic guard pass, basic escape, and basic submission and focus on doing all three during a roll. While it’s true that techniques take time to develop the best time to hone a black belt level technique is during white belt. I focused solely on armbars and knee cut passes when I was a white belt and those are now my go to moves.

A new white belt was tapping every 20 seconds because he was gassing himself. He asked "What should I do?" and I said "The first thing you should do is do less."

Thanks for the tips bro I’m a new BJJ white belt and I accidentally go into panic mode when I’m one on one fighting with someone so the breathing thing kinda helped me understand Thanks 👍

My advice for beginners is usually focus on learning to handfight and when to have an over or an under hook. Also keep your knees close to your elbows and guard that space religiously.

thanks man, im 8 months in and i’m finally starting to feel like I know what I’m doing when I roll (doesnt mean i dont get my ass handed to me, but hey, everyone at my gym has 30+ lbs on me, so thats a fun challenge)

I would say that’s the best advise for all combat sport practitioners beginners or advanced, grappling or striking..

Exactly. Improper execution comes from inflexibility. Breathing is a huge part of flexibility and brain body communication. The diaphragm is one of the most crucial core muscles.

Breathing and relaxing 💯 too many times I’ve seen people be a danger to others and to themselves.

It is both humbling and a test of patience when you can't submit anyone during the beginning of your journey.
