Es hat schon seinen Grund, warum man sein Kind in Deutschland nicht Küchentisch, Autoreifen oder Fahrradkette nennen darf

There is a saying in Germany: "Kevin is not a name, it's a diagnosis."

The choice of names says something more about the intelligence and foresight of the parents than about the child itself.
The German authorities have the child's name in mind when approving children's names and thus protect them from the stupidity of their parents.

I think of River Jude Phoenix the former actor and his brother Leaf Phoenix also an actor who changed to his now known name Joaquin Phoenix.
If you look at the names of the siblings, Rain Phoenix, Summer Phoenix, Jodean Bottom, Liberty Phoenix, you recognize a pattern that comes from the parents.
Children are not always happy with the names they are given by their parents.

I guess it is not very smart to give your kid the name Batman, Terminator, Maracúja or Nutella (even it is legal in some countries)- one day the kid has to go to school and will then go though hell... 😢

It is absolutely correct for Germany not allowing parents to ruin their childrens names for the sake of their self-fulfilment. Names such as "Peaches", "Rock" or "Reed" are not proper for children.

For the non-gendered names, you can choose a middle name to clear up the matter. Many Kids in Germany are named Eike. It is a male first name in northern Germany but a female first name in the Rhein region.

As far as I know, there is no actual rule or law that you have to choose a gender-specific name. The usual thing is that people choose a middle name that makes it more "clear" because they're told it's what they should do but I think it's more of a recommendation.

Man könnte sich ja präventiv an seinen Kindern rächen, indem man sie Hirngrieth, Strunzhilde, Pansenfred, Eiterschosch... nennt.

Gerade das möchten die Ämter verhindern.

Some children need to be protected from the stupidity of their parents.

European countries are civil law jurisdictions whereby changing names at birth, unless idiotic or offensive, is virtually impossible. The only change of name that can take place is to for a married woman to change her name to her husband's surname if she so choses, but her maiden name always appears on her national ID card or passport. This is also the reason why idiotic or offensive names are not allowed and are listed, and thanks God for that. You are coming from a common law jurisdiction where every Karen, Tom, Dick, and Harry can change her or his name by a simple deed poll, a paradise for crooks who wish to reinvent themselves every Monday of Friday. Moreover, in most common law jurisdiction, national ID cards are not issued to the population, but in Europe, it is mandatory in almost all countries and is a big deal because without it, one literally doesn't exists.

Man möchte halt verhindern, dass jemand Schantalle Schackeline Brunzbichler heißen muss...

There is no list of names that are not alllowed.
The name has to show gender but it is not so strickt, names that can be both gender are allowed. like Kim or Eike.
It is up to the person in the individual Standesamt.
Might be that a name would be allowed in the one office but would get denied in another.

You shouldn't name your child Claire if your surname is Grube, because it sounds like Klärgrube (septic tank).

Kevin is not a typical German name. It is a foreign name from the English speaking world that made it into our society and language. The female equivalent would be Chantal. However, Kevin, Chantal and certain other names derived from other languages and countries were used mainly be families from a problematic social background. The likes of Kevin und Chantal were often causing problems in kindergardens and schools. Hence there is a saying in Germany now, that Kevin isn't a name, it is a diagnosis.
