The new Leica Vario-Elmarit-SL 70-200 f/2.8 ASPH is a fast telephoto zoom lens with a constant aperture throughout the entire zoom range. Its design and superior image quality make this lens a top choice for portrait, sport, nature, and event photography. Nick takes a look at the lens from a recent trip to Greenland.

Me being lensless between 25mm - 69mm, this focal length has become one of my favorites for panos. Used in the portrait position 70 - 110 mm for most so far. Even changing focal points as moving across looking down a commercial fishing port canal & merged in LR with excellent results. Good to Leica offering more options.

Timing could not be better - this very morning (UK) was considering the 24-70-vs 24-90 to then go with the 90-280 which was a bit long for me- now I know - 24-70 + 70-200. - perfect thanks

Excellent overview and welcome addition!

P.S. I noticed that Sigma had released firmware affording the use of the Leica x1.4 teleconverter with their TC-capable lenses as well.

I have difficulty with seeing any point in selling a rebadged Sigma lens... 🤔
Other than adding some aluminum and some magnesium (and 250 grams !!), is there any difference !??

Nick. Well done. Cannot find a video here on your channel on the M11D. Can you format SD cards and/or the internal memory via the Fotos app? Thanks.

In a recent video you displayed Leica SL lenses charts showing the focussing ranges at different apertures. I cannot find them on Leica website and perhaps you would kindly advise how/where I can download them Many thanks John

Thanks for the lens review. - Concerning that noise thing you're talking about, that would be very nice to have a comparison SL2-S and SL3 if it comes to noise. I use my SL2-S heavily for reportage and other photographers always ask me, how I can dare to shoot up to ISO 25000 (I do almost everything with the APO-Summicron-SL 2/75 and use my legs for zooming). ISO 25000 is no issue on the SL2-S, that's the main reason I hesitate to get the SL3, I'm waiting for the SL3-S, 24 megapixel totally sufficient for reportage and people/portrait. Would be nice though if the SL3-S comes with a 33 megapixel BSI sensor - stacked sensor or even global shutter ;)

Thanks for the in depth review! - Wow, did Leica organise an event in the Arctic region (Greenland) for testing/presenting that lens?

Thank you for replying. I cannot locate the particular video and I apologise for the confusion.
I have seen a Leica lens chart on a YouTube site that I am sure was one of yours, that shows the various in focus ranges at different apertures for various SL lenses.
For example:
Summicron-SL 1:2/35 ASPH
f2 - 1m - 5m
f8 - 10m - ∞
These values are just for illustration and are not accurate.
Your YouTube videos are my main source for information about Leica cameras and lenses etc, but I'm sorry if it was not one of yours.

Dear Nick, thank you! How does this lens compare qualitatively it’s the 90-280?

Will the extender with the apo SL lenses? Such as 35 and 75. Will the f2 lens become f4 with the use. Thanks.

Is there one good reason why I shoudnt buy the much cheaper Sigma F2.8 70-200 instead?

I didn't realize that the stabilization in my SL3 will do nothing for me once I put the 90mm Summicron M lens on the body. Isn't that a let down????

A bit too heavy for my taste. It looks like it will be a winner though.

I'll never get the point of those rebranding.

100-400 not sharp enough, 90-280 too expensive, this is just right.
