Most people would've pointed to the Statue of Liberty Architecture set for having one piece ruin a set (the face).

The specific reason it's not molded in that color is sadly part integrity, it is impossible to make an orange ball joint in that color and have it survive, like brown bricks

I usually make changes to sets while building them with issues in mind. Especially removing stud shooters from Star Wars sets. So if I got this helmet set, I would probably try to find a brick to match it and cover the gray.

I think it looks fine. On all phase two helmets the antennas are usually gray/silver ish. As for the phase 1 I mean yeah all orange is cool but. I like it with the gray more. It makes the antenna look like it’s been reinforced with an extra bit of metal.

If you want, you can absolutely color match then find paint. Since that piece is color locked to gray, sure you have to mod the Lego technically. But you probably have enough of those pieces.

You seem very well-versed in Lego they should know certain pieces will never be changed from the color because the car indicate something or has a better property than other colors, such as gray pieces tending to be higher friction pieces. Which is why it may be using something like a ball joint

One piece that really triggers me is the one on the big Statue of Liberty set Lego sold in 2018. The face piece is really not accurate. And it doesn't really have a face to be honest with you.

As others have said, the piece is that color for durability reasons. That being said, I'd have preferred they just went with an orange hinge that wasn't as posable.

My friend had this issue with one of her projects. She ended up just painting that one piece. You can barely even tell that it was painted (she used a glossy sealant)

You can dye plastic and I’m sure you can dye it to the correct color.
