DIY Powerglide Build in your Garage

DIY, powerglide build. Now, I'm not a professional transmission builder at all. But powerglides are pretty simple for the most part. Mike got all the parts and pieces to put his back together. He has some good pieces here so this transmission should be just what the doctor ordered for some reliability. The 1.69 planetary will for sure make the car leave a tad softer, which means he can throw more power at it.....lol

The engineer who designed the aluminum 2 speed PG was a freaking genius of common sense 💪

3:15 parking pawl, pronounced like the man's name Paul. You are welcome.

Can't get over how simple the transmission are, simple is better in some applications for sure.

Assembly tip...go to the office supply store and get yourself some clear plastic folder sleeves. When your putting the piston in the drum, put two sleeves inside the drum. One on the inside (small diameter)and one on the outer side and your piston will slide right in. You will have less chance of cutting the seal than if you use a feeler guage or seal knife.

Clear as mud, I should be able to do a transmission rebuild now! What's the worst that could go wrong!? Hold my beer, I got this!

I rebuilt one of these when I was 20 years old for a 64 stingray I bought cheap. It went smoothly and worked perfectly.

First of all you are one of my favorite youtubers and have been watching you since the beginning...honestly respect the fact that you do such a wide array of your own stuff...that being said, i build race powerglides for a living and so much is wrong here...a transmission, much like an engine, is not a good place to do the old "that's close enough, i think it;ll work" thing. For one your leaving a lot on the table performance wise and secondly with the expensive parts that go in one of these units if not installed properly it will hurt if not kill their lifespan. Respectfully, i hope no one builds their transmission like this.

John you know 1000x more than I'll ever know but I did work a GM parts counter and sold transmission parts. Its called ( just for anyone interested when they go to order one) a Parking Pawl pronounced like a guys name "Paul". Great video's keep on kicking but buddy!

Man I was happy to see this video pop up, although I watch all of your content. Just so happens I just got my 1.58s from sonnax and need to get them installed. They are very proud of the 1.58s by the way! I’ve never been in a power glide but after watching this, I’m gonna give it a try.

You can put 2 clutches on top of each other because their splined they won’t spin on each other I have taken the material off of one side of 2 clutches and put them metal to metal to get the right clearance

Hey TJ, thanks again for going through step by step on building a powerglide. I built my first ever powerglide by your video, all tested well, I went 5.3's in the 1/8th on motor.

Thanks again
