My wife asked for a pay rise using this argument. They rejected her argument and she ended up walking out. Her employer spent the next 2 months pestering her to come back. She started her own business and now supplies her services to her old employer and charges them way more than she originally asked for.

Imagine being the top rated employee out of the whole company for 2 years straight and being told you can't get a raise but you're still expected to work as hard as you have been for the last 2 years. Worst part is they are paying below average for your position. That dude is awesome.
