Net Making - Fishing Net - How To Make Your Own Fishing Net

In this video I show you how to make your own fishing net. I will demonstrate how to load a netting needle and then how to determine the depth of the fishing net. Once the depth of the net has been established, the net is then made by adding more netting to the desired length.

I'm 75 years old and this brought back memories from childhood. it was always the little ones job to load the needles.pop used to buy pre made nets, the needles were used to sew the net to the larger cords that held the corks on one cord and the lead on the other heavy cord and this creates the gill nets. we also made our lead weights. Thanks for the trip back to my island home.

Thank you very much for showing this. I am Fisherman and learned it, but you actually explain it better than my teachers did.^^ One step i would like to mention. If you fill the needle with yarn, do not rotate it in 360°. Rotate it 180° and than back. Othrwise it will create loops to the yarn and meshes.

That netting needle’s proper name is a “Fid” or fisherman’s fid. My father was a commercial fisherman who fished the Grand Banks and George’s Banks back in the 1940’s & 50’s. I was a kid back then when he showed me how to make & repair a net. He was so adept at it that he would only use his fingers as a gauge for his left hand with the fid in his right. Great video. Brings back old memories.

Thank you so much for renewing my memories of net making with my Dad. I am 69 years old now and have wanted to remember how to do this. Dad was a Captain on the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland, Virginia and became a Master Pilot Tugboat Captain for Humble Oil. Wow, that goes back a bit doesn't it? He stayed with the company through all the changes and retired from Exxon years back. We made hammocks, nets for fishing when that was still allowed and had great times together. Bless you. I am starting to do netting again.

When I was a kid a LONG time ago, an old Finnish fisherman showed me how to make nets - we made a badminton net for my mom. Then when I went to a military survival school I made a crude net and was surprised at how well it worked. Recently I started putting together a survival kit for backcountry flying, and the survival nets commercially available seem like junk to me, so I decided to make my own. The first one was a disaster. The second one was much better, but a few meshes are wonky. Hopefully the third time will be a charm. It's been fun learning. Your how-to videos were the best I could find, thank you for posting them.

This is awesome, I remember being 4 years old and my grandfather teaching me this. And by the time age 9 I made 8 feet deep by 12 feet wide, used it for hunting, I caught 3 ptarmigans. And seen my grandfather teaching me so many things was awesome days. This is an awesome moment when you learn something that can catch good food for you and family to enjoy. It’s free to learn its feed food from nature that we get from nature of learning from our parents/grandparents.

I’ve crocheted a lot over the years and with your explanation, was able to see how the knots were forming, which is nice because the little board was getting in the way and I just used my fingers to measure. Once you get it, I feel that’s easier. Thanks for teaching me a new skill! 😊

I experimented making bio-degradable net for our garden, using jute twine, watching this clip. It was one of the most satisfying and therapeutic things I've done so thank you very much!

As a child my family used to visit other family in Maine for two weeks every year. My uncle was a lobster fisherman and I spent many days at the piers and on the boat. I always saw others repairing or making their nets, but never got curious enough to know how since I live in upstate NY, and never had the need for a net. Watching this takes me back to those younger years. I am now disabled from Diabetes and wheel chair bound, and looking for a hobby to help fill my time. I am going to give this a try, although I don't know what I will do with the netting I create. My mother used to have a net embellished with sea shells we collected and lobster balls hanging in our home for many, many years. Thank you for this tutorial.

Thank you so much. I watched another fellow's video and I could tell that he was very good at making nets, but I just couldn't get my hands to match what his were able to do. This time, by watching your video a few times as I worked through each step, I now feel pretty good about making this net to catch a bunch invasive carp out of our pond.

Hi. Until I watched your video, i had never understood a Sheetbend Knot. Now it makes since! Thank you for taking the time to show us Landlubbers how to tie a knot. I've been doing the individual lines over a single straight line and throwing square knots in them to make a cargo net. I appreciate knowing how to actually do net-making.THANK YOU!
