Why Musicians NEED to Practice Modes | PLUS Cello Scale Exercises

What is a scale exercise that will train your hands and ears in a whole new way? MODES! I highly recommend practicing modes because it will mix up the order of half vs whole steps in your left hand, result in different fingering patterns, and all while staying in 1 key! Here I talk about various ways to practice modes, when we see modes in our cello repertoire, and I demonstrate some exercises, from beginner to advanced (or CRAZY! 😜).
If you try out these exercises or make up your own mode exercise, tag us @thecellodoll & use the hashtag #CelloDollMode so Celli & I can see your hard work! 💪🎶

For me, the real beauty and character of the modes comes out when you keep the root note the same and change the key signature.

Great videos as always! I like to also practice the arpeggios of the modes and, say, sticking with C, go through the interval changes of each mode. So, with C as the first note, play as though was the first note of the 7 modes! Talk about learning the fingerboard!👍🎶😁

Modes are really helpful! Glad that you brought it up! I’ve experimented with exploring the modes, while staying on the same starting note. So, for example: starting on A, but playing the Phrygian, the next notes would be a half step, whole step, whole step, etc.

I love this exercise! Thank you 🤓 I second the request for a video of a full warmup routine. I started playing cello when I was 40. I’ve taken maybe a dozen lessons and done a lot of learning by YouTube videos like yours. I’d love to be able to run through a scales routine with a video.

Really like your videos. Especially these types of new exercises. It would really be a nice video if you would run through what you do daily during a practice session. There is so many videos of what to do in the gym to lose weight, but so few tutorials for cellists who want to up their game in the practice room.

Great dolling CD! Not enough jazz theory taught to classical players. An idea I just thought of would be to play all the modes (just 1 octave) in thumb position on say D and A strings. eg. start on A in the key of A, then shift to B doing Dorian mode, C# Phrygian, D Lydian, etc. Of course there's limits with hand size and things getting cramped too far up the neck but you'd end up with a much better knowledge of the fingerboard. Keep up your crazy enthusiasm!! It's always appreciated :-)
