One critical issue that many cities face is extreme heat. Temperatures are rising, and in cities, the heat stress is increased as concrete surfaces absorb and hold onto heat.

How do we address this problem? One solution lies in the abundance of empty roof space in cities.

Up to 50% of the hard surfaces in cities are flat roofs. These spaces could provide all-natural, citywide air conditioning if they were planted with gardens and greenery nourished with collected rainwater.

On the ground, planting more trees and nurturing them with reused stormwater irrigation networks can help lower high temperatures in our neighborhoods, too. With more trees and green roofs, we can keep our cities cooler and improve quality of life for everyone living in them.
