Since the 1930s, aspiring Santas have been gathering in Midland, Michigan for the annual Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School, a three-day course for Kris Kringle newbies and veterans alike. While there they learn everything from holiday jingles, beard grooming, and belly laughs to negotiating contracts and working with small children. The student St. Nicks interact with live reindeer, get fashion tips, and take a trip to nearby Frankenmuth, home of the self-styled “largest Christmas store in the world.” The school is run by 66-year-old dean Tom Valent and his aptly named wife Holly.

I've been thinking of becoming a Santa for some time now, I'm still 46 and my beard it's not even gray, but that's an easy fix I guess with some paint, what I will need to loosen is my soldier attitude a little bit to be more soft, but I watch this video in tears from being to end so I think I have at least what it takes to start. I have a little girl that I love with the light that keeps my heart pumping and I like children they are pure souls and make anyone smile. So I guess I could try it!

- Now… The reason why is… it’s important that you learn to do this is because you are the most photographed people in the world.
- The Charles W. Howard Santa Claus School is the world’s oldest Santa Claus school. It is here to help Santas become Santa.
- (singing together) We wish you a merry Christmas, we wish you a merry Christmas…
- The Santa Claus School teaches the Santas how to build that Santa spirit in their heart.
- (referring to the reindeer) What are you doing?
- It’s not how far you go in life.
-It’s who you walk with.
- It’s who you walk with.
-That’s nice.
- Somewhere around 5000 Santas have come to Santa Claus School since 1986. This year we’ve had 200 Santas at Santa School, and 25% of those are Mrs Clauses.
- (a woman in a jacket) You have to be over here behind me.
-(a girl) Look. It’s just a Santa.
- What hit me was that the kids won’t remember what they got for Christmas but they’re gonna remember their visit with Santa.
- I wouldn’t change a thing with it.
- If that natural hair is taken care of, it can look really good. And so can a real natural hair from a wig master. But you know a lot of these fellows are from my generation, the hippie generation, so they had that hair back when they were younger, so they just bring it back.
- That wasn’t until I became Santa Claus that I actually grew up. My DNA changed. DNA stands for December Nice Attitude.
- Santa Jerry has fun in life so I’m sure he has fun being Santa.

- You leave your ego in a sleigh. So everyone is more heart-centered, and they offer their experiences or tricks to help you become a better Santa cause you never learn it off. I’m not worthy, a simple grasshopper, sure, I help pick out one or two other rookie Santas and give them tips on how to be the best Santa they can be.
