Materials scientist Dr Eral Bele will discuss the creating new materials, almost from scratch in his virtual lecture "Engineered Materials: A Quest for the Exceptional, the Unique, and the Remarkable".

The materials we use in everyday objects, such as bicycles, running shoes, skateboards etc, have changed enormously in the last few decades. They all seem to be much lighter, stronger, and even unusual (some are lighter than air!), all thanks to clever engineering from the visible to the atomic scale. But how do engineers create materials with such unique properties, and how do they go about "pushing the boundaries" of what is possible?

About the speaker
Dr Eral Bele, Associate Professor (Teaching) at UCL Mechanical Engineering
Dr Eral Bele is a materials scientist and an Associate Professor and Departmental Tutor at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at University College London (UCL). Dr Bele is also the Programme Director of the Future Manufacturing and Nanoscale Engineering MSc based at UCL East.
