Hello and welcome to TUESDAY NEWSDAY! Your number one resource for the entire week's worth of VR news. I so far have gotten dozens if not hundreds of messages from people that STILL have practically bricked VR headsets due to an odd server outage at Meta, meanwhile V38 drops, the Oculus logo is gone, and turns out, nobody really cares about the metaverse anymore.

The VR addiction is absolutely tangible, the feeling of being inside a game compared to controlling a player character on flat screens is an incredible feeling, and gives players so much more control and natively uses their intuition to figure out how to play much faster than using a controller or keyboard and mouse would

Not sure about paperweight, but mine has certainly been glitching out a little for the past couple months. Disappearing app library, games crashing out of nowhere, guardian screen completely freezing. It's to the point that i'm starting to wonder if i just bought a defective unit

I love how you refilmed the intro featuring the sponsor! So cool!

Also can I just say your camera work and all of the footage throughout your recent videos have been so perfect. I love the footage of everything at CES and the high quality shots of headsets and such.

i think the addiction aspect has to do with getting that first "WOW" feeling when trying VR for the first time and after that, a lot of people try to chase that *high* they had the first time.... where as flat gaming can have nice graphics and stuff, but its been a loooong time since something really astonishing happened in the flat gaming area.... but idk. i am no expert in those fields ^^

I think the initial phase of getting into vr is very addictive because it's something brand new and doesn't traditionally follow the usual game status quo. Nowadays I don't get into vr often but I still find it very fun

As a fellow russian subscriber i'll be sure to keep you updated if the Quest is getting blocked or not. If it does, then i'll have a good house decoration worth of 300$ (quite a sum here)

Realistically, I've always considered the true metaverse to be like the internet but as a vr mmo. Like it's a decentralised VR hub where you can hang out with people and maybe travel into a game together, maybe without having to mess with party invites with an open source implentation to put into pre existing games.
This is the way I've always imagined it to be, but I just don't feel like I actually see that version anywhere and the term "metaverse" has an unclear use other than a vr buzzword.

Also while it's at the top of my head, I don't really want the metaverse made by Meta, especially given what I've said above. This is because the oculus/Meta platform is just not designed for the metaverse, with its exclusive games and absolutely needing a Meta headset. Yes, revive exists, but it can be a hassle, and third party software should not have to be used just to play games using their platform, especially if they're trying to "connect" the world through the "metaverse" they're supposedly trying to make.

Tl;dr the metaverse should be a vr mmo Internet, and Meta is not fit for making the metaverse

Hi ! I’m Kirby (says my persona) and I’m super addicted to VRChat since I joined 4 years ago. Truth be told, this is actually the most addictive thing I ever got to experience (says IRL me). Maybe I just have a bit of a boring life haha.. but seriously, I truly see VRChat as a "shared lucid dream" where everyone can be who they want or an alternate version of themselves and it’s all about unlimited fun+++ there !
It’s probably the best thing that happened to me in years but.. it’s also somewhat of a curse, in my case. I’m literally obsessed with the thought of being able to log on whenever - it’s a great and convenient way to escape real life and stress..! However, at some point, it started creating a separation with real life and everything would just revolve around my VR life (like a full-time job on top of my full-time job). That is quite crazy + scary and well, I do take breaks from everything virtual, from time to time. I’ve found that doing so helps me remain connected with life and my actual self (there is no Kirby me IRL).
I often need to remind myself that VRChat has to remain a hobby, something I have to “deserve” in order to fully enjoy it on a weekly basis. Unfortunately for me, it has become wayyy too easy to run away from real-life responsibilities and I always tend to choose the easiest option, knowing that I have access to a colorful and (almost) perfect fantasy world that’s only 5 min. away..! I have to admit that I’m also addicted to partying and dancing in vrc, which is dangerously fun, really !! To be honest, it could easily become a real problem if I don’t force myself to slow down when I start to feel exhausted, as I descend into madness lol
Maybe it’s just the way I am but Kirby/VR me doesn’t really wanna hold back and craves a full/constraint-free experience (fear of missing out maybe ?). I guess that’s why I prefer going “all in” and enjoy myself for as long as deemed reasonable(-ish). Predictably, I usually end up staying away/offline for a few weeks, just to reset and rest my weak hoomin body. Kirby, the persona I created (or did it create itself ?), has no actual or physical limitations and I must say I kinda love-hate "her" for that.. but hey, it’s part of me and I accept it now..! like I have a choice, there’s no going back now lol
To sum up, while I consider my relationship with VR/VRChat to be quite unhealthy at times, sadly (me just me), I still strongly recommend it to anyone who’s curious. I've met lots of awesome people there and made many friends who share the same passion as meeee ! The amount of fun I’ve had there is inexpressible !! I think it all comes down to me being careful and keeping in mind that my virtual life is a privilege, in ways. All of us VR lovers, dreamers and early adopters, we’re pioneers in a way and I can’t wait to see how it’s gonna be in 5-10 years from now..! UwU

"Metaverse" has been coined, but it's meaning is the lame and corporate Facebook variation of virtual reality. Meta (aka Facebook) should have learned a thing from other companies that own many brands, they let them live their own life. Facebook already had very off-putting brand most people wanted to stay away from, but they just HAD to cram in their Facebook / Meta bullshit into Oculus. Even going as far as changing the name to "Meta" for the Oculus brand, which makes no sense. They're not changing it to Metabook or Metagram? So why is it Meta Quest now? So ridiculous.

I have a Rift CV1 from 2018 and a Quest 2 and I’ll go like 6 months without touching VR. I find normal gaming much more addictive. The main reasons I don’t pick up VR that often is 1) the constant low-level nausea, 2) uncomfortable head strap on Quest 2 that gives me pressure headaches, and 3) I can’t get Google Earth to work on the Quest.

Vrchat have been my go to place to relax after work. I work late shifts so it's nice to be able to hang around and socialise with people to get the stress off of your shoulders.

I feel like VR at this point is still on baby steps, sure we have come a long way, but what VR needs right now is not better devices (that will improve with time anyways), but more game developers willing to invest on making actually full developed games. Don't get me wrong, the games right now out there for VR are fun, I definitely enjoy using the Quest 2, but it just feels like a cool gadget sitting in my room with no further purpose. I would like to see more immersive games, the community is there, we just need The Game that will change the VR experience for good, after that other developers will follow. For example, imagine if Rockstar is secretly making GTA 6 fully VR focused, that for me would be a game changer.

Even with my disdain for Facebook and Meta I wanted to get a Quest 2 eventually,
But with seeing how often these issues pop up (and looking at my previous luck) and the small things like replacing the Oculus logo for the Meta logo along with the cringey push for the "metaverse" makes me want to wait more and more for a true competitor.

The best experience I've had in VR was trying out racing sims. It's so trippy when you can move your head and you look outside the side window of your car. Also the force feedback on the steering wheel and the pedals somehow feel a lot more realistic when you can't see them. I hope at some point in the future I'll be able to afford a rig that can drive current flight sims to cutting edge framerates and resolutions.

0:39 hmmm that transition sounds so familiar I can't quite put my finger on where I've heard that before... 🧐

As far as VR addiction goes, I really struggle with staying in VR for more than 8 hours a week. I usually play for around 2-3 hours once or twice in a week, simply due to the hassle of being in VR. Battery life, occasional motion sickness, soreness from the head strap, heat output, and the time it takes to get set up in VR all take away from how amazing I think VR is. I also haven't had any games in VR completely pull me in for more than a week either, whereas with PC or console gaming a new game can keep me playing for up to 6 hours a day for weeks at a time
