Elīna Garanča & Christian Thielemann – Mahler: V.Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen [Rückert-Lieder]

Artists and audiences alike felt a deep sense of loss when the pandemic put a sudden end to live performances last year. The ability to enjoy digital concerts online was some consolation, but as nothing can quite match the magic of direct contact between performer and audience, the few live concerts that were able to go ahead during this period were particularly meaningful. 'Live from Salzburg' documents two such remarkable events, featuring mezzo-soprano Elīna Garanča’s appearances at the Salzburg Festival in the summers of 2020 and 2021 with the Wiener Philharmoniker and Christian Thielemann. These are concerts of historic significance, in part because they defied the crisis facing live performance worldwide, but first and foremost because they provided music-making of such exceptional intensity.

Orchestral songs were again at the heart of the programme, this time Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder. These five songs do not, however, constitute a self-contained cycle but are individual pieces that Mahler wrote at different times. Their only link is that all five poems were written by the same poet, whose sensitive verse sets their basic tone. Mahler originally set all five poems for solo voice and piano, opining that they were “chamber-like in character”, and there is no doubt that the Rückert-Lieder are heartfelt, largely intimate character-pieces that privilege personal emotion. This aspect finds particularly impressive expression in the heartfelt love song “Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen”, whose floating melodic line and rapt beauty cast their spell on the listener, while creating a somnambulistic atmosphere.

Both Elīna Garanča and Christian Thielemann are at the top of their game here. Superb rendering by them and the orchestra. Bravi.

Belo o corne inglês, seguem os clarinetes, depois os contrabaixos...e o canto entra, sensível e profundo. Isso é muito belo!

Why not upload the whole piece, why cut it?

Fantastic! This music and these performers make me melt as I listen. I can't wait to get the album. Will there be a DVD or Blu Ray?

Ich Bin Der Welt Abhanden Gekommen

''I am lost to the world with which I used to waste so much time.
It has heard nothing from me for so long,
That it may very well believe I am dead!
It is of no consequence to me
If it thinks me dead;
I cannot deny it, for I really am dead to the world.
I am dead to the world's tumult,
And I rest in a quiet realm!
I live alone in my heaven,
In my love and in my song. ‘’

These months of "lock down '' have helped me, perhaps, understand the lyrics better.
I live alone. I do not go to work or to the gym or out to cafes or classes.
Days go by when I don't speak face to face with anyone.
I often ignore the news media.
It's just ME in my studio where I draw and paint.
Pascal said that all of our miseries derive from our inability to sit quietly in a room.
Wordsworth wrote "The world is too much with us.... Getting and spending, we lay waste our powers"
Many great artists and thinkers have benefited from periods of isolation.
Sometimes voluntary.
Sometimes as a result of illness or imprisonment.
We waste our powers with distractions.
This forced disconnection from the daily round of busy-ness might turn out to be a blessing.
Maybe that's what Mahler was feeling.

It's a sacrilege to cut this lied but DG has a habit of doing that, unfortunately. It's unfair to the conductor, soloist and orchestra. What we do hear is sublime.

So beautiful!! But why she sings the "Alto Version" (Db major) and not the the Mezzo Version (Eb major) with her marvellous height ??

The orchestra is far too loud when accompanying the vocalist.

Horrible versión. Desangelada y poco emotiva.

? Nous VOULONS ESPERER que NON !!!
