This kimono costs 1 million yen in Japan! It’s called Furisode and its traditionally worn on coming of age day. Since they are very expensive many parents pass down their family kimonos, rent them or even get creative and make their own!

I was in Yokohama during coming of age day and they were absolutely gorgeous. They were all at the water getting photos taken, having fun with friends and probably strangers too.

Seijin no hi (coming of age day) is a special celebratory day for every young man and woman who will/already did turn 20 from the 1st april the prev year to the 1st april of the current year! It's held on the second monday of every jan, this year it was on the 9th.

It's the year they turn legal and are allowed to drink, etc! Although from this year the age has been/will be lowered to 18, the celebration is still for 20 y/os for now.

The men typically wear traditional clothes, or more commonly suits nowadays, while the women wear furisode (a type of kimono) where only young/unmarried women can wear! They are easily distinguishable by their sweeping long sleeves as compared to shorter half-sleeves that married/middleaged women wear.

Unfortunately only Japanese citizens/residents will get an official invitation for the morning ceremony indoors where theres a talk by the town mayor etc, but after that, anyone, including foreigners can join in and celebrate outside!

In Kyoto on the 15th jan there will also be an archery competition for people who just celebrated seijin no hi, and for veteran archers, its a sort of traditional event as well dating back centuries! This is getting too long now but there's more info on google 🤣 I researched all these cuz i really wanted to go this year but i was too broke and it was too rushed, so now im planning to go next year instead! Im gonna buy a cheaper furisode too haha. Anyone wanna join?

I've been wanting to waer traditional kimono since i was a little girl but was worried if that would be offensive. Is there a certain one that foreigners can wear?

Most of them uses rental kimonos 👘. The pass down kimonos 👘 have less colours. Less cheesey and trashy colors. Subtle colors you can tell the difference.

So that red kimono I saw in an episode of Komi can’t communicate must have been expensive, I noticed the red one was worn by Komi’s mother
