U.S. House Republican leaders on Tuesday (November 12) celebrated their party's retention of control in both chambers of Congress, vowing to implement an "America First" agenda following last week's elections that saw Republicans win the presidency and both houses of Congress.
Decision Desk HQ projected on Monday that President-elect Donald Trump's Republican Party will control both houses of Congress when he takes office in January, enabling him to push an agenda of slashing taxes and shrinking the federal government.
House Speaker Mike Johnson, addressing reporters on the steps of the U.S. Capitol, expressed optimism about an expanded majority. "We expect that the majority will be larger than last time. We still have a number of races outstanding. But we're very optimistic about those," Johnson said.
Republicans had already secured a U.S. Senate majority of at least 52-46, according to Edison Research projections. DDHQ projected they would hold at least 218 seats in the House of Representatives, with eight races yet to be called.
House Majority Whip Tom Emmer emphasized the party's mandate, citing voter concerns about border security, cost of living, and crime. "Americans elected a Republican president, a Republican Senate and a Republican House with a mandate," Emmer stated.
The Republican victory comes after two years of divided government under Democratic President Joe Biden, during which Congress struggled with basic functions such as keeping the government open. The thin Republican House majority had been fractious, even ousting former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Johnson revealed ongoing discussions with Trump regarding potential administration appointments and their impact on the House majority. He plans to meet Trump at Mar-a-Lago over the weekend to discuss future plans.
The Republican victory is expected to influence the current "lame duck" session, with end-of-year deadlines looming for government funding and extending borrowing authority. One possible scenario involves passing temporary measures to give the incoming Trump administration input on these issues.
