Boardshop's Top 10 Surfboards Of The Year (So Far...)
It’s that time of year when we put our heads together, share our experiences of boards across the year, talk to a wide range of customers and look at the sales. This year we’ve paid a little less attention to sales and looked at the boards that have been really popular with customers once they’ve had a chance to surf them. There are some boards that would feature every year until the planet self-combusts! The likes of the Firewire Seaside, Phipps OBE, FORM Flow Stik, Channel Islands Mid and Lost Puddle Jumper never seem to fade away, they are such good boards they just keep selling. Read on to see what our/our customers top ten picks are for the year.
10. Ryan Lovelace Love Machine FM
It wasn’t until Ian got a 6’ 9 and we all had a surf on it that the true brilliance of this board became apparent. It makes you smile immediately, paddles like a dream and gets on a rail super easily, it’s so smooth. Its works in really poor surf but also as step up. We’ve done half a dozen customs of people headed to Indo etc. you won’t really understand this board until you surf it.
9. Pyzel Red Tiger
Pyzel is inexorably linked with John John, not a bad hook up to have! Everyone knows about the brilliance of the Gremlin, Phantom and Ghost and now the Red Tiger is another must-have Pyzel. It sits below the Ghost and alongside/above the Phantom, it’s the board you’ll surf everyday if the waves are half decent. Super-fast and enough performance to satisfy anyone.
8. Lib Tech X Lost Puddle Jumper HP
This is the bestselling Lib Tech for the last couple of years and we’ve started to get some steady feedback. You lot love this board, it’s tough, a great Biolos shape and is a forgiving everyday driver, pretty much anyone can surf this board.
7. Son of Cobra Round Twin
Paul Lefevre never disappoints, added the Round Twin to the Classic Twin has been great. Super stylish to look at and there’s no doubt it, will make you a more stylish surfer too! Twinny speed, total control, and as smooth to surf as it gets.
6. Maurice Cole Red Dingo
The master that is MC has come up with a mid-length that does the down and dirty stuff as well as any mid out there, but it’s got a proper twinkle in its eye! Hard edged rails, reverse vee, and performance to spare it’s a game changer for the mid length riding connoisseur.
5. Firewire Mashup
Dan Mann genius right here. This board is a firm favourite in the pool and the sea, massive wave range with a forgiving feel but turns it on in better waves. This really is the shortboard that almost every ability of surfer can ride.
4. Channel Islands G Skate
A slow burner until word got round. Size it at least an inch to what you might initially think. The shape is extraordinary, so much glide and flow and the tail shape gives you incredible turning potential. It like the perfect wife/husband, great in the kitchen but loads of fun too!
3. Slater Firewire FRK+
We’ve been waiting for a board like this for ages and it seems most of you have too! One of the few total usable good wave boards for the average surfer. The right amount of volume in the right places to ensure you catch plenty of waves and surf properly too. This board feels like it’s doing the hard yards for you. A smash hit at the Wave on the expert settings and a staple for most overseas adventures, even goes on the better days at home!
2. Channel Islands M23
As the world of mid lengths has evolved everyone who rides them is looking for more performance without losing all the massive Mid plus points. The M23 gives you just that, paddle power and all the boring stuff but a shorter board feel and more back foot performance. Truly love this board.
1. Lost RNF ’96
What more can you say about this board, it won’t stop selling in both PU and the Lib Tech version. It blends all wave performance with total usability. If you’re a ripper, it’s a higher performance board, if you’re an average surfer it’s just good clean fun!
That’s it for this year, we can already hear people shouting what about this board or that board…it’s not really that important it’s just a bit of fun and maybe a guide for anyone looking for a new board. We get sent new boards to try all the time but we only choose the ones we think will work for our customers and represent good value. If there is a brand or board model out there that you think we should check out lets us know.
As always, we aim to keep our customers happy and make the board buying process as easy as possible so don’t forget we offer 0% finance, our board trade in programme, our 30 Day Ride Out Guarantee and we’re always on hand to give advice
