Mapping in Permaculture

Mapping can be done remotely, anywhere in the world for any location. Permaculture designers use a body of known facts—science—to find patterns for piecing together productive properties. In order to do so, we need to know everything about a site, not just location (distance from equator, altitude, distance from ocean) but also the specific features. We need to identify the strengths and limitations of a site to provide a harmonious, high-performance design. This digital mapping method shows every physical object—roads, waterways, buildings, trees, etc—on a site, as well as the contour lines, so that designers can recognize where best to put houses, gardens, food forests, roads, grazing areas, farm forestry, and reintroduced wild spaces. With that, we can create abundant cycles and ongoing fertility that will outlast us. Take a look at maps—satellite map, color elevation map, slope map—of Zaytuna Farm, Geoff Lawton’s 66-acre demonstration site to get a glimpse of what LIDAR mapping can do. LIDAR can be used for mapping individual properties, as well as communities, tracking the entire watershed around a region so each household can understand the full potential of their plot. That’s the ideal use for this technology!

I'm a new bee but I've learned that Permaculture is a good thing, and what I'd like to learn is everything about it, and exited that there's not a way, but a superb way out of this mess we are in. In fact just today (not knowing what's available) I was thinking of how to make a contour map of a site with simple surveying tools. My plan is to get some land out side the cities, somewhere in the south-west of the US.
And thank you Mr Lawton for this great channel.

Slope-maps and “hydrostobing” were the salient points I found interesting in this video.

Good day! I'm from Russia. And I learn Permaculture too. I like it. Thank you for your work 🙏🙏🙏

Hey Geoff I'd be interested in seeing a more thorough tutorial on how you use LIDAR mapping on a property design.
On another note I'm interested in cricket farming in a cold climate to feed chickens.
Cheers.

Love the slope map!
I put in two ponds on my property, wouldn't have had the courage (or the knowledge) without your PDC. Now if it would only rain, we are in a 1 in 50 year drought.

I thoroughly enjoyed my recent tour of Zaytuna Farm. We even run into Geoff chewing on a sanga on his way to move the cows. Thank you for all you do Geoff.

Hi Geoff... I'm getting into the first steps of permaculture mostly through your videos and through Mollison books. The one thing I would like to learn more about is how some permaculture techniques can be used or adopted in a Mediterranean agricultural landscape such as olive trees, vineyards, fruit etc...

Hey Geoff, I live on the Praries in Canada. Most of our land has very minimal slope. You have a really good point about looking at LIDAR maps, satellite image etc which gives a lot of foreknowledge before assessing a property for permaculture. Thanks for the good idea

Hi Geoff, did my PDC with you in ...i think it was 1998. So great to see how much info you have got out since then.

There's a really loud chime sound at the start of these videos now, probably part of the new design...would be good to tone that down a bit cos i was just trying to watch with headphones on and it hurt my ears.

Thanks for the new video! Used Google Earth and Google Maps for an attempt at viewing our site. Its gave an idea or birds eye view but not any contour as far as I could see. From there I drew the site...must be better, faster ways though. Love to hear more. Thanks!

Wow that slope map is so cool! What a useful layer to have. And the water strobing is so interesting too!
