Iraq War - Shock And Awe - March 22-23, 2003

This is a digital copy from a VHS tape I recorded on the day of the war in March 2003, this video documents this historic event which were spurred from the 2001 terrorist attacks on the US and led into (at the time of this posting) an 11 year war in Iraq.

This tape recording started sometime after the bombing campaign started and lasted for the entirety of the length of the tape which was 8 hours, thus the rough start and end, posted here is the entire 8 hours.

I cleaned the quality of the video up some and resized it to 720p from its original 640x480 SD format. For the majority of this video, it is on MSNBC, toward the end, I must of tired of that networked and changed the channel to a few other networks, this is also included.

From my standing, please feel free to download it for your archive and or continued education on the topic.

Please don't ask me how to download it as there are many free and fee based applications on the internet that will do it for you, please do a Google search, any requests will go unanswered.

Hearing them talk about how amazing it is that they can broadcast this attack live and that they can use computer animations to pinpoint specific target buildings in Baghdad really shows just how far technology has come in the 20 years since. Social media and Google Earth are doing all that so efficiently now that even the news organizations are relying on them.

I remember my Dad letting me stay up late to watch this with him. I was always fascinated with war as a kid, so this was the coolest thing I had ever seen.

I remember watching this when my brother was there for three years during this time. I remember it being so hard to believe he’s come back after hearing all of this.

I can’t believe that this all happened so long ago, my RAF Sqn had deployed to the region and I was unfortunately left behind as I was just two months away from being demobed (retired) from the RAF, it was eerily quite in the Sqn hangar and offices, one day it was the usual hustle and bustle of training flights and getting deployment equipment packed and dispatched overseas, the next they were gone, and I was almost alone, and upset that I couldn’t have gone with them. By the time they returned I was a civvie and although I was invited to the welcome home bash (party) it was almost as if I was an outsider, unable to share the “when I” stories, the joy at getting back home, and the camaraderie of everything they endured and went through as a team, a family, and individual. 17 years later one of my men came to me to talk, he was suffering from PTS, he had held it in for all that time, and wanted to talk about it with someone (me) that could be understanding and not suffering the same things from being there, I was truly honoured that he came to me, and I am glad he had the trust in me to help him.
Why am I writing this????, Well, simply because there are some people commenting and replying about how great the forces involved were, so great they were in the ease of the “victory”, and all the time “forgetting “ that every weapon detonation meant people died, every engagement meant someone died, and someone had taken a life. Someone once said “war is hell”, but from what I was told by my comrade, all those years later, he said “hell doesn’t have a clue about war”. So before you fly flags and beat your chest in “victory” try to remember ALL the lives lost and destroyed by this war, and all other wars, war doesn’t have winners and losers, just LOSERS. The title says March 22-23 but this looks more like March 20 to be honest. A lot of the stuff in this video happened on March 20th.

That’s actually a body double for Brian Williams. The real Brian Williams was in the cockpit of his F-15 flying top cover for the strike package that night. After landing he was inserted by HALO jump with Delta Force to hunt for SCUDS. Really. Just ask him.

Fun fact, this was supposed to continue, uninterrupted, for 3 - 5 days, at dozens of sites. UK said they would not participate in that, so it was scaled back, to satisfy our allies. It was meant as a demonstration to our enemies.
