At the Liquor Retailers' Association's 28th anniversary celebrations in 1965, then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew made his case for creating a multicultural society in Singapore that is a model for the wider region - and that would stand the test of time. The first thing to notice is not the man himself but the date. It is October, 1965. This is before Singapore would actually register sustained, economic growth and overcome its racial problems and attract the attention of leaders the world over. And yet this man, Lee Kuan Yew, had this amazing swagger, this confidence about him. Declaring that Singapore would be around in 1000 years. It is almost like he KNEW, like you know the sun will rise tomorrow, that Singapore under his leadership would rise and overcome its economic problems and become a united, First World nation. Now that is a true leader.
