How to Deadhead Dianthus

Watch and learn how easy it is to deadhead your perennial Dianthus flowers so that you’ll get more flowers throughout the Summer into Fall. This is a quick garden chore that is quite relaxing to do! I use Paint the Town Magenta Dianthus as my example, which is a wonderful evergreen perennial with bright flowers.

I have annual Dianthus that's in its third summer! We've had mild winters and I think that's why. I deadhead it regularly during the summer.

Thanks for giving a great shout out for the nippers and how they work and the protective covering that goes over the blades

Having large patches of Dianthus, I was willing to sacrifice a few blossoms so I carefully used my weed eater and was done in about two minutes.

I have a TON of these dianthus. I love them when they bloom and dread the deadheading. Dreadheading. HA! Laura, how many hours per week do you think you spend gardening? I'm curious. Thanks for your videos. They are very helpful to me.

I take a Hedge trimmer and go straight across the top. I may have to sacrifice a few flowers; but It would take hours to do it your way. It works.

Can you just pinch off the dried off seed pods that turned brown? Or do you need to cut from the stem?

I appreciate the tutorial. I have a question that is a bit off topic. I have a very mature wooded yard with a central lawn and established borders of shade loving perennials from the previous owners. Every year tree seedlings come up in the beds either from seed drop or squirrel planting. Is there an easy way to eliminate the tree seedlings before they become established? I know I can pull them out with some effort but wondered if you can cut them at the ground. Thanks.

I am normal! I thought about “OCD” when pruning the Dianthus.

GREAT VIDEO. Do you think those dead pods hold viable seeds? I want to try to plant the seeds harvested……..have you tried?
