CLIP DESCRIPTION:
With a prize trout on the line, Paul (Brad Pitt) gets swept downriver.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
Robert Redford's lyrical direction sets the tone for this evocative adaptation of author Norman MacLean's memoir of his idyllic Montana youth. The MacLean family is presided over by the strict but encouraging Rev. MacLean (Tom Skerritt) and his loving wife (Brenda Blethyn). Craig Sheffer stars as the young Norman, the older son in his family, who takes his school work and writing a bit too seriously for Paul (Brad Pitt), the impetuous younger son, to take much stock in. Paul would rather have a good time, drink and play cards than get involved with academic study. Where Norman wants to be a college literature professor, Paul would prefer to stay in Montana all his life and wrangle some kind of job writing for a local newspaper. But, ironically, Paul is the better fly fisherman and in this way attains a sense of perfection. The film also details the MacLean boys' involvement with a colorful group of town's people -- including a young Indian woman Paul decides to date and the defiant Jessie (Emily Lloyd), whom Norman later marries.

“At that moment I knew, surely and clearly, that I was witnessing perfection. He stood before us, suspended above the earth, free from all its laws like a work of art, and I knew, just as surely and clearly, that life is not a work of art, and that the moment could not last.”

Very rare to see Americana perfectly encapsulated in a film. Redford outdid himself with this one.

It's not just fly fishing at its finest that elevates this scene, it's the spiritual dimension that is captured so beautifully, captured with this almost mystical perfection. The very best of pre WW2 Americana is brought to vivid & poignant life in this scene. The way things once were. Sheer sublime perfection indeed.

The film captures fishing, and especially fly fishing, so beautifully that it always makes me weep by the end. "I am haunted by waters".

I watched this in VHS with my dad back in the days. Even as an elementary school kid, I knew I witnessed something special.

I think I have witnessed perfection. A friend of mine could not be out fished, beautiful double haul cast and could lay a dry so sweetly from great distance. He won the one fly competition in Christchurch NZ twice. I have caught an awful lot of fish in my now over 50s yrs of fly-fishing in the North island, but not as many as Johnny.

The idea, on paper, of a movie with at its core, fly fishing..sounds about as enthralling as watching paint dry..but every inch of this movie is perfect. The acting, the music, the cinematrography...Robert should have gotten the oscar for it.

Great acting at 1:27. Norman smiles "that's my little bro! No one truly appreciates him more than I do."

The primordial yet artistic satisfaction of fly fishing is perfectly summed up in this short clip.

Eventually,

all things merge into one...

and a river runs through it.

The river was cut

by the world's great flood...

and runs over rocks

from the basement of time.

On some of the rocks

are timeless raindrops.

Under the rocks are the words...

and some of the words are theirs.

I am haunted by waters.

Is a river changes its direction the fish in the river is left behind. But wow the river is beautiful. So when I was younger a small stream behind my house was redirected. I saw the dying fish and helped the river on its past. Who would be able to re- direct this powerful river. Wow the river stole my heart.
