Christianity is usually seen as the main religion in Europe, but in Albania and a few other countries, Islam maintains a large presence, and I give an explanation on why exactly this is!

Also worth mentioning that Albania didn't deal in population exchange like Serbia, Greece, Bulgaria and Turkey did, in fact many muslims ended up in Albania in 19-20th century because they weren't persecuted there based on religion.

Fun fact: Tirana, the capital of Albania, has the largest mosque in the Balkans outside of İstanbul. It's an impressive piece of architecture.

I'm an Albanian Muslim from Montenegro and love all non-Muslim Albanians too but when it come to Islam, don't speak in our name. Don't get it twisted and think that if you start to antagonize us the way Serbs did, that we won't die to protect our faith against you too if you're forcing our hands, yes even if we are all Albanians. To all Arabs calling us brothers- We are Illyrians. We were Pagans before. Because of the wars and other stuff, we were forced to take up religion. But to us religion doesn’t have the same importance as to other countries. We have our blood first (as we say, we will melt our crosses and turn them to bullets if our Muslim Albanian Brothers need aid), then religion partially. Islam and even Christianity is not practiced as other countries think. We celebrate a few occasions but we don’t see it as religious. We drink Alcohol and don’t even cover up like Arabs do. Putting us in the same bucket as eastern countries is a huge mistake. It’s not accurate and it’s not something we want to be labeled with: which includes sexism- and other bullshit third word countries create. Please stop calling us brothers. For a small population country that was fragmented in different tribes it was important to survive and changing religion was easier than being assimilated by a more powerful adversary.But you have to admit that culture and language was saved in this way.

You re telling it like the ottomans forced everyone to became muslim. They controlled the balkans for more than 500 years if they wanted everyone to became muslim, they could easily do that. But the ottomans gave minorities great autonomy and led them live their own religion. That’s the reason why the empire got so old and successful, because they managed to handle many different races ethnicities and religions.

I'm Muslim Albanian and I love it. I can't imagine myself practicing another faith. We have our own spin on Islam which I think is a good example of what a Europeanized Islam can look like for other European Muslims. We take things not so seriously and respect differences overall.

1. Turkish invasion.
2. Albanians never stopped fighting as oppose to others
3. Turks wanted to separate Albanian ties to Vatican, Napoli and Venice so, they came up with forced
