Rule#1 Know more about the car than the salesman does. 2) Never buy a car when you bring your wife to look at the car for the first time. 3) Ignore it when they ask you how much you can afford every month. 4) Don't tell them that you can pay the car off in a month. 5) Visit more than one dealer. You might get a salesman who is very hungry to sell a $50, 000 car.

If you’re paying MSRP at least bring in a loan offer from your bank or credit Union to negotiate percentage rates.

Driver License: It needs to be current and valid. A large corporate dealership may scan your license to confirm this with the state. You get to watch them do this if you like. But no one is required by law to let you drive a car before submitting to their process, and no one will get in trouble with management if you complain they had you do this because management set the policy in the first place. I work corporate dealership and it's true that I don't need your license to print OTD numbers but I cannot let you drive a car without scanning it first to make sure it's legit.

Insurance: This is where things get tricky but if you have a lienholder, you don't fully own your car. They bought it for you, you're paying them back. You just get custodial possession of the vehicle. If you have a loan, part of perfecting the lien is that you need to have full coverage insurance on the bank-owned vehicle so that of you turn out of the dealership and wreck the car, the lienholder can be made whole. So I've literally had to tell people they need to sit and get insurance or they can't take delivery of the bank-owned car, because if they are not insured to drive in the state they can't legally drive away in the car because the bank won't let them leave without that.

Trade: If you don't have a title (lienholder has the title) then you need to know your lender's bank name and your account number. Ideally, that day you decide to do a deal, get your payoff with a 10 or 20 day payoff and per diem. Reason being is because even if dealership generates the check immediately, it won't get to the lender and processed that day so they need to account for the daily interest charges on your loan.

Signers: I unfortunately have had to have this conversation in the past but if the car is going to be picked up by someone else other than the buyer, they can't also just randomly show up to sign for the buyer. You would need some kind of notarized power of attorney but no one shows up with that. As well, if there is another person's name on the trade car, unless you live in a state that allows for registrations to be signed "and/or" (which not every state allows this) you can't do everything in just one person's signature.

Proof of residence: Things like that should be in good standing. Don't try to use as proof of roof an overdue cable or phone bill. Doesn't look good. Also for proof of residence, a lot of banks I've worked with don't accept leasing agreements because they don't prove current residence. You could sign it after never moving in, and get a license that shows that address. You could have lived there but been evicted for nonpayment of rent. Whatever the case. A bill that shows that you're currently receiving mail at an address is definitely one of the strongest indicators.

Pay stubs: If you have to provide them, bring the two to three most recent for each job you're claiming. If self employed, bank statements should preferably be separate but if business and personal funds commingle you need to at least show regular deposits going into the account that match up with the values of the reported income for the business. Even those green dot cards have a way to pull deposit records. If you receive government benefits or court settlements, the award letter and bank statements for deposit will work. Don't claim anything you can't prove if you don't have the credit profile to back it up.

Not once in decades of buying cars have I been asked to show a driver's license to road test a car, and that would be in a dozen plus states.

Historically, the items to bring to a dealership are:
Funds or proof of funding such as cash and a cosigner
Trade in
Pink Slip
Keys
Spouse or significant other ( to talk you out of buying the vehicle)

4:58 "Making sure it starts" LOL If you have to even think about if a vehicle you want to buy is going to start you should not even be looking at that vehicle in the first place.

Make sure you bring the spare key. Dealer will want to test drive your trade in and many times "misplaces" the key to keep you at the dealership. Say I got the spare, mail the key to is almost instantly found !

Do not collude with the sales person and back office to avoid filing the paperwork by breaking down your cash to smaller amounts. Thats a Federal felony. And a dealer you never want to buy a car from.

If the dealer ever holds any of your credit card bank information title from you and you want it back immediately- tell them your call the police - stand on receptionist desk and scream or yell out loud to the managers!

it is a good idea to show them a recent credit score. you can obtain that from your credit card app and snap a picture of that on your phone so they take you seriously in preliminary negotiations.

A common misconception is that one must have a drivers license to purchase or drive a vehicle. A license is required to drive on 'public thoroughfares'. A drivers license is not required by law to purchase a vehicle and not required to drive it on private property. There are plenty of trucks driven around ranches and farms that never leave private property.

Proof of insurance is required by lenders to take delivery of a vehicle. If you buy it outright you don't have to have proof of insurance.

FYI, in the digital age, I have not used checks for years. So, I refuse to order a box of checks. I have only counter checks that the bank printed for me years ago when I opened my account. I just went to buy a car hours away from my house, and after hours of finishing the deal, at 9:30 at night on a Saturday, after writing a check a couple hours earlier, they refused to take it because it was a counter check without my printed name and address. It didn't matter that I provided them with proof I was approved for a loan and they could get their money directly from my bank next week, they would not accept my check or do the deal until they got another check that had my printed name and address. Even when I told them the other account I had a check for didn't have money in it, they thought that would be preferable!!! Crazy. They asked me to write a bad check instead of taking a good one! I couldn't believe it.

I explained to them that anyone can order checks starting at any number for a brand new account, and they wouldn't know if it was a good check. In fact, I was taught to do that 30 years ago because businesses trusted checks with a higher check number, say in the 5, 000 range.

But, the dealer said if my check was bad, without a printed name and address, they had no legal recourse if it was a bad check. I think that is bunk. It is obvious that I signed a purchase agreement and I provided all kinds of proof of identity and home. So, they could prove I didn't pay them if the check was no good. But, no go.

So, be sure to talk to the finance manager &/or the general manager to ask what forms of payment they will take, and if they will take a counter check without a printed name and address if you need that, before you go. Also, don't trust your bank when they say you can apply for the loan while at the dealer and they can send the money right over that day. It certainly does not work on Saturday, is not that fast when you are on hold every time you call with a question, and my bank told me after I was already there that they will only send a check via UPS, not send it via wire.

So, that was a disaster. Good bank. Fantastic rates. But, I needed to take care of the financing before I went, which I didn't want to do since I wasn't sure I could find a car within 45 days in this market. I didn't want to have my credit hit again if I didn't actually buy a car. So, I paid for it in hassle time.

You guys are the best 👍🏽👍🏽 quick question when a person-is applying for a car loan how much debt would reduce the chances of getting a good loan and rate? Gracias!
