Best swell of my life time at the most fickle wave on the planet, Ma'alaea aka Freight Trains on Maui. First time ever capturing what it's like to ride inside 8-10 foot waves at this spot.

It got this big and maybe even bigger back in the mid and late 1970's, and almost this big, a few more times in the early eighties. No internet, no surf cams, no forecasters, and Maui was still empty back then. No one carried cameras, one or two pro surf photographers, and they were usually busy on surf trips. But we caught it, with only several guys out. I made special boards so I could make it from the top all the way through to the end. The Ma'alaea dragster series. But this swell was about as good as it gets, the perfect angle, doing everything right, and defining its own name "freight trains".

Has there ever been a better surfer than Kai Lenny? Contests are cool, but for all around adventure and big wave amazement, it's this kid. He's amazing!!!

Wow! That barrel you got a little over three minutes in was one of Best barrels I’ve ever seen being filmed. Award-winning shot and wave

Kai, you´re such a incredibly gifted young man. The way you make these ultra fast barrels seem so easy to ride is absolutely mind blowing.
Cheers from Rio!

It's good to know that even a surf ninja like KL gets dropped in on. That was a historic day of Maui surfing.

I grew up surfing Freights and I surfed that 05 monster north swell that Kai mentioned. That swell was a mutant that wrapped from the other side of the island, this one was a pure south which is INSANE.
Much respect Braddah, wish I was home to have scored those epic waves

My husband and I are astounded at the sheer determination. Almost 60 yrs old never touched a surfboard and live in Mid-Missouri Kai you've got us hooked!

That's the best surf footage I've ever seen, awesome waves and world class riding, really enjoyed watching that, literally captures you and almost feels like it's the viewer surfing. Keep up the awesome surfing and videos 💪👊

LOVE LOVE LOVE the footage. INSANE barrel shots and sounds and I'm still loving the shots from the shoulder, the momentum, dazzling... I don't believe I've ever seen anyone dive through the face of the wave like the surfer did at 3:10 - cool capture!!! 😎

Thank you for this spectacular video! You have given all of us the chance to view a very rare experience straight from the drivers seat. I live inland and haven't surfed for a few years, and at any rate I am probably too old to ever dream of surfing a place like Maalaea. Perhaps you can show us a video from Jaws from the same perspective. Keep up the great work and thanks again for sharing this.
