Crossroads - Eugene's Trick Bag Lesson (Analysis)

In this video, I'll show you how to play Eugene's Trick Bag (Paganini Caprice 5) on electric guitar. This one is probably the most accurate Steve Vai's - Paganini 5th Caprice Crossroads Lesson tab you can find.
Paganini Caprice 5 is one of 24 pieces composed by virtuoso violinist Niccolò Paganini in the early 19th century. The piece is known for its incredible speed and extremely high technical difficulty. Paganini is said to have been able to play it on one string, but there is no evidence to support or refute this. The piece is also associated with the movie Crossroads as "Eugene's Trick Bag", which was written and performed by Steve Vai and heavily inspired by the caprice. (wikipedia)

This video is Eugene's Trick Bag lesson video.

Picking selections maybe not be the best but this transcription will be useful for you and I am planning to records a performance video.

After numerous times throughout the years of trying to play this piece at half speed I can now say that I finally can't play this.

Guys play it in 2x speed then it sounds exactly like how Steve Vai played it

People already thought Paganini was demon-possessed on the violin. I can't imagine what they would think if he was given an electric guitar

At half speed this is still an extremely challenging piece! thanks for posting this and demonstrating that even at lower tempo you can still make something sound very musical and put it at the reach of hobbyists and students wanting to explore and learn. 👍👍

I'm watching and listening and I"m like, 'Is he gonna miss anything?'.... And then I got to the end and it was like, 'Nope. He didn't miss anything!".. That was about as spot on as it gets, sir. I appreciate all the leg work you did to get this JEM ;) to the masses.

Great to see a fully transcribed version of this, played slow, with clean view of picking hand and fingering hand. Top marks! I'll have another crack at it :)

Yes, thank you for posting! I learned this note for note back when the movie came out in 1986, and we didn't have YouTube! It was by ear and using a 7 second sampler to slow phrases down and then learning them bit by bit. It was so refreshing as I relearned it using your upload, my finger just started walking across the fretboard like an old forgotten road re discovered. Even though I fretted the Arpeggios slightly different, the rest of it was spot on for me. Thank you for giving me a blast from the past, I was a year from graduating high school when I learned this, approaching 40 years ago, just saddening, all those little pieces like this that old age and chemo brain have stolen from my memory. Many thanks to you for giving me this awesome transcription to refresh my mind!

Thank you so much! It’s really nice to see the notes lined up with the fingers in almost Slo-mo. I’m trying to learn this song and it’s so hard to get the tabs to match with my head hears to match what my fingers will do lol. Slowing it down helps
