London's Oldest Fast Food

Pie and mash is London's oldest and most traditional fast food.

We met up with owner Joe Cooke, great grandson of Robert Cooke, who opened East London's first pie and mash shop in 1862. Joe taught us how to make a traditional pie and mash, complete with parsley sauce, known as liquor.

Ive been and eaten from there. As a kid i lived in east london and my mother enjoyed a pie and mash on a friday. She would get a double serving and nail the lot. She is 5'6 and 10 stone lol. Monster. The pie and mash doesnt taste of much tbh, the liquor is ok. But it's a quick, easy, filling meal. And the community around the shop is like a pub. Everyone knows everyone. I still pop in whenever i go to east london, i go a diffrent place now. But it still brings back good memories and fills me up. The jelly eels are disgusting though. Fk that. 😂

Trouble with Pie n Mash shops is they never kept up to date with modern tastes and times and the old crowd have passed way or moved on, more likely to be a more hipster crowd who live close with a more refined taste and willing to spend money on a new take on it, can still do the old style just modernise it...

I Miss Roman road pie and mash grew up with it as a child always the best even better then mc ds as a kid you gave me choice between pie and mash I would always choose Roman road over Bethnal Green
