Asteroids are small, rocky bodies that orbit the Sun. Although asteroids orbit the Sun like planets, they are much smaller than planets. Hence they are also referred as minor planets. As minor planets in the outer Solar System were discovered that were found to have volatile-rich surfaces similar to comets, these came to be distinguished from the objects found in the main asteroid belt.
There are numerous asteroids in our solar system. Most of them live in the main asteroid belt a region between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. As per NASA, the current known count of asteroids is 1,113,527.
These asteroids range in size from Vesta the largest known asteroid at about 329 miles in diameter to bodies that are less than 33 feet across. If we combine the masses of all known asteroids it will be less than that of Earths's Moon.
NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies keeps an eye on the sky, surveying more than 28,000 asteroids and a much smaller number of comets that pass near Earth.
Space agencies regularly track more than 28000 known asteroids as they orbit the Sun, and occasionally cross Earth's orbit.
NASA already clarified that we have nothing to worry about as far as these asteroids are concerned. In fact, at least for the next hundred years, there is no large space rock on a collision course with Earth.
