This is a ballad of 20 stanzas. It was written in 1832 and published 10 years later. It was inspired by the 13th-century short prose text Donna di Scalotta which tells the tragic story of Elaine of Astolat also known as the Lady of Shallot, who was a young noblewoman stranded in a tower up the river from Camelot.
