The Old Firm Derby: Religion, Hate & Football | Celtic FC vs Rangers FC | Roots of the Rivalry

Celtic vs Rangers, The Bhoys vs The Gers, Catholic vs Protestant, Green vs Blue. The Old Firm rivalry is one of the most intense in the world of football. Not only from a sporting standpoint, but the history of Celtic and the history of Rangers are intertwined with the history of Glasgow itself. The Irish Immigration, monarchy, unionism, sectarianism national identity and much more all contribute to the hate shared between these two clubs. Today, we look at the history of the Old Firm derby.

It's strange having YouTubers talk about something that happens literally two minutes down the road from my flat.

Not bad for a Canadian. The pronunciation of sectarianism was a howler though. Love the series mate.

This is the most passionate derby in Scotland and Britain.

The rivalry really is no joke. My dad wasn’t a fan of being a dick to rangers fans, but he fucking loved beating them. I don’t think I ever saw him so happy. He suddenly died a few days before a big old firm game in 2015, and Celtic won. It was bittersweet.

He went to highschool with one of the Lisbon Lions, Bobby Murdoch, at Our Lady’s highschool.

I’m also Canadian, but this rivalry was a huge part of my life. Even wore rangers jerseys to piss my dad off when I was really young... boy, do I regret that. Dick move.

it's pronounced sect-tarianism not secretarianism

Although I'm a Tottenham fan, I bleed Celtic blood! It's hard explaining to people that dont understand that if you're brought up in an Irish Catholic household, you've it breed into you from birth. Love the video, especially you not being from Ireland or Scotland that you've explained everything spot on! And for idiots that try and argue, it IS the worlds oldest & biggest rivalry!!!

A lot of what you say is true. A good amount is left out however, especially around the conflict in the north of Ireland, how the two teams came to be symbols of the warring sides, and the modern day politics of the 2 sets of supporters. Whilst the derby was largely defined by religion in the past, politics now defines it. Celtic largely represent republicanism (not to be confused with the US brand of republicanism. Irish republicanism is very much rooted in socialist and left politics), anti monarchism, and left wing politics, whilst rangers fans represent unionism/loyalism, pro, monarchism, and the right wing. Whilst the religious riots of the past are gone from Glasgow, don’t let this fool you. The city is still very much segregated along old lines in some places, and political and footballing differences can sometimes mean death.

Excellent work as usual keep it up, one thing that has to be emphasized here is that Celtic have never had a strictly Catholics only policy ever as one of their most successful managers (Jock Stein) was a Protestant. Rangers on the other hand thorougly enforced a Protestants only policy of all employees even the janitors it was rumoured and didnt sign a Catholic player til 1985 that being Mo Johnston (that signing is an epic tale in itself if anyone cares to look it up) causing some Rangers supporters to burn their season tickets publicly and vowing to never return to another match.

I am from New Zealand, and thirty years ago, I was in the UK, doing what we refer to as an O.E (overseas experience). I was in Glasgow at the same time as an "old firm" derby. While I didn't have tickets for the match, a friend and I went to Ibrox on the day, just to see what goes on. We couldn't believe our eyes, both sets of fans hurling abuse at each other, cursing each other to hell. I thought to myself, this is crazy, it's just a different flavour of the same religion, and most of these people are cut from the same cloth. It wasn't until I got back to NZ, did I discover that the roots of the rivalry went back decades if not centuries.

Contrary to what you say in this video, in the early days Rangers didn't have a specifically Protestant identity except in the sense of reflecting the fact that Scotland was an overwhelmingly Protestant country at the time (so no different to any other sporting institution). The more overtly Protestant aspect to the club's identity really came in following the move of Belfast shipyard Harland & Wolff to Govan (where Rangers are based) in 1912. By that time, there had also been the formation of clubs with overtly Irish Catholic roots - Celtic, Hibernian and Dundee Hibernian (later to become Dundee United) which also sharpened divisions.

Amazing job man! I've just finished watching the game. I obviously don't support either of those, but I loved the intensity on the pitch and off the pitch with the fans being very loud. Loved learning more about the Old Firm!

Imagine hating an individual for their religious beliefs, for the club they support and their national origins

Here after Celtic defeated Rangers 2-1 to win the Scottish League Cup.
This rivalry was so big, especially because this year marks the 150th anniversary of the Scottish football and the first rivalry against England.
