I have just become aware of this method. For years, I have been turning the work around after the first couple of stiches, sewing, and turning it around again to continue. I will try it with my treadle, which is the machine I am using for my current project.

Another way is to crank the stitch length down to the smallest stitch and make 4-6 stitches, then return to the length you want. I have never had stitches come loose this way.

I saw a. Vintage commercial from 1967 for a touch and sew they claimed it could do a chain stitch and now I wonder how ?
