Hades Is an Incredible Roguelike Where Dying Is the Best Part

Hades is an absolutely remarkable game that takes the commonly frustrating video game act of dying and somehow transforms it into an integral and enjoyable part of the experience. It builds upon everything developer Supergiant Games has done so far in Bastion, Transistor, and Pyre — intricate combat systems, amazing art and music, and a fantastic story. But its greatest success in my mind is how it takes the concept of death that is at the core of most roguelikes and expertly weaves it in with the actual story and flow of the gameplay.

I think what makes Hades stand out among the -very crowded- rouge lite library of games is that it is very narrative driven. Quite a feat for the genre, and unlike the rest, winning, and getting further is not the only way to advance the story. In fact, the more you lose the more you go on forward with knowing the background of the situation, and get to meet the fantastic cast of characters SuperGiant put on this game... The VGAs did it dirty on Hades last night.

Death = another chance to pet Cerberus.

It's quite lovely to hear someone just talk about how much they like a game. No reviewing, just "yeah, the fun"

This game is amazing for the sheer quantity of quality of the voiced dialogue. Found myself dying on purpose a few times just to accelerate some of the conversations between the characters.

Hades us the one rogue like where i don't furiously mash the "try again" button when i die, mostly because there isn't one technically, but because it's one of the few games that, instead of relying on the momentum i have from my anger, puts a hand on my shoulder, gives me a chance to breath, and then asks me "you ready to go again?" And since I'd have likely already talked to a few characters, and gotten new lines, and improved Zag a bit more, I can smile calmly and say "yeah, one more".

Hades is one of the few roguelikes that wants to make sure you're calm, and ready to go and have FUN instead of numbly hitting your head against a wall doing run after run mindlessly.

I don't play a ton of Rogue-lights/likes, but of the big ones I've put hours into like Binding of Isaac & Enter the Gungeon, I think I had the most fun with Hades. A huge part of it is how you're constantly urged to each progressive room with the promise of some new upgrade or currency, rather than just the usual random hope of other RLs. The game is HARD but not quite as ball crushingly frustrating as others can be.

Such an amazing game. Supergiant never disappoints, imo. Got wins number 40 and 41 last night. Next is exagryph on 6 heat. Piece of cake.

Hands down Hades should have won Best Narrative award and Game of the Year, the Game Awards were an Oscars snub level of ridiculous.

as someone who likes story-driven games im utterly in love with the fact that they took greek mythology (where everyone in-universe knows death is a slap on the wrist) and combined it with roguelike gameplay (defined by dying all the fuckin time) in one of the best examples of story/gameplay integration i've ever seen. as someone who is dumb and bad at video games i dont like how that means youre inherently obligated to grind out runs even when its tedious and starts weighing on your soul. i know that's the point and it's tying into the themes of hopelessness and determination and rebirth but here's the thing. i'm an impatient little shit

I'd never heard of it at all, but it looks and sounds pretty fucking great. Love me some actual story lines. Thanks for the tip!

Rogues - seekers of wealth who walk the edge of death. Hades - god of wealth and death. How poetic one of the best rogue-likes is named for the god of wealth and death.
Favorite God, Favorite Rogue-like.

I actually forgot that a random weapon each run gives you a darkness boost

Actually! Dusa does NOT have a crush on Zag. She ends up telling you that she "doesn't like you like that". Threw me for a loop lol.
